Positive Covid-19 test sinks BU-UConn game UPDATED

Two days ahead of what was to be the Terriers’ season opener against Connecticut, a positive Covid-19 test within the BU hockey program has resulted in a cessation of all athletic activities and cancellation of Saturday’s game.

According to a BU Athletics’ press release:

The positive test came from a member of the team's Tier 1 personnel, which includes student-athletes, coaches, managers and support staff. Tier 1 personnel are tested three times a week in accordance with NCAA, Hockey East and University protocols.

To ensure the health and safety of the BU campus and greater Boston community, the Department of Athletics and all of its varsity programs have been following state, city and University guidelines since returning to campus in August.

The Women’s Team’s opening series against New Hampshire is not impacted by the positive test. (See below).

► The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation in conjunction with author Brian W. Shaughnessy has published a book highlighting the first 40 winners of men’s college hockey’s top individual award. Hobey Baker Memorial Award: The First 40 chronicles the careers of the winners of the award, beginning with 1981 honoree Neal Broten and features detailed biographies of their college hockey achievements and professional careers.

Three Terriers have won the Hobey Baker Award, named for the Princeton standout who led the Tigers to national championships in 1912 and 1914. They are Chris Drury, Matt Gilroy (photo) and Jack Eichel. Drury won the award in 1998 after being runner-up in 1997. A member of the 1995 national title team, he was the first Terrier to tally 100 goals and 100 assists. Gilroy, who won the award in 2009, was a three-time All-American and led BU to the NCAA championship in 2009. In 2015 as a freshman, Eichel became the youngest player to received the award. His 71 points was tops in Division 1 and he led BU to the Hockey East title and to the national championship game.
