Game Day: Terriers host ASU; ERod on fire; Covid cancels Women’s series with BC UPDATED

Terriers return to Agganis Arena to host a pair of games against Arizona State, one of two D1 independent teams. Friday’s game begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be live streamed on College Sports Live.

Arizona State is coming off a home sweep of #14 Cornell, winning 5-2 and 3-2. In December, they were swept by Denver, took a pair from Clarkson and split with Colorado College.

Sun Devils are led by a pair of 25-point scorers, sophomore Matthew Kopperud (12G,13A) and grad student Colin Theisen (13G,12A) and by Josh Doan with 21 points. Their top scoring defenseman is sophomore Tim Lovell (14 points), a transfer from BC. Sophomore Cole Brady (3.68 GAA) and Ben Kraws(3.40) have split the goaltending.

Assessing the Sun Devils, Head Coach Albie O’Connell noted that this opponent will be “challenging on a lot of different levels. They play hard. They have some veteran guys. They have a lot of skill and can score some goals.”

Calling ASU’s style hard and physical, he added, “We’ll have to make sure to be ready to battle in those one-on-one battles and those plays around the net. We’ll have to be ready to battle in those small areas.”

O’Connell pointed out that after not having a lot of practice time on ice the previous week, this week’s practices have been at high pace. “We’ll have a lot more guys this week but we won’t have a full complement.”

Drew Commesso, who was unavailable against Brown following lengthy travel returning from the aborted WJCs, returns this weekend. Following the win against Brown, O’Connell indicated that Robert Mastrosimone would return for the ASU series. Both are in tonight's lineup.

Looking back

Evan Rodrigues continues keeping his name all over the scoresheet. On Wednesday, he scored the game-winning goal in the Penguins’ 5-3 win against St. Louis. His power-play tally (goal #14) came just 12 seconds after Sidney Crosby had tied the score. Rodrigues also added his 14th assist.

Then, on Thursday, he found the net again—this time on a breakaway—and added another helper in the Penguins 6-2 win against the Flyers. With 30 points, the Etobicoke, Ontario native established a new career best. In the past six games, he has scored seven times.

Prior to Thursday’s game, an article in The Athletic (Behind the Penguins’ hot streak, there’s Evan Rodrigues and the art of carrying the puck) looked at his scoring streak:

Evan Rodrigues is on a 36-goal pace through the first 32 games of the regular season.

Be honest. What does the preseason version of yourself say if you hear this in October 2021? It’d be almost inconceivable. Rodrigues hasn’t cracked 36 goals cumulatively over the course of the last five years, let alone in one season. His output has never been any more than league average and often slightly below it.

It’s not just the fact that the puck is going into the net. Rodrigues’ success isn’t the result of some gaudy, unrepeatable shooting percentage driven by lucky charms. It’s supported by a bevy of data points and eye tests alike, all of which suggest he’s becoming a conductor of play rather than a passenger; a true driver of offense.

Matt Nieto scored his third goal, assisted by Nick Bonino, in the Sharks’ 3-2 win against the Sabres.

► Newly appointed U.S. Olympic Team Coach David Quinn reached for a former Terrier teammate and BU coaching colleague, selecting former Terrier and NHL standout Scott Young as an assistant coach for the Beijing Games next month.

Young, who also served as a Team USA assistant at the 2018 Olympic Games, is currently in his fifth season as director of player development for the Penguins.

Following two seasons at BU (1985-87) during which he tallied 65 points in 71 games, he turned pro with the Hartford Whalers to begin a 17-year NHL career. During that time, he won the Stanley Cup twice—with Pittsburgh in 1991 and Colorado in 1996.

Young is one of only 12 U.S.-born men’s hockey players to compete in three Olympic Winter Games (1988, 1992, 2002). He was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.

Also named to Quinn’s staff are Northern Michigan head coach Mike Hastings, St. Cloud head coach Brett Larson and USA national goaltending coach David Lassonde.

On Thursday Chris Peters and Frank Seravalli reported that 15 current and former NCAA players have been invited to join Team USA for the Olympics. Among them is David Warsofsky, a member of BU’s 2009 national championship team, who is currently playing for Ingolstadt in the DEL. Previously he played in 55 NHL games for the Bruins, Penguins, Devils and Avalanche.
