Chris Peters’ Talking Hockey Sense video podcast examines the top 2023 college hockey recruiting classes, beginning with Commonwealth Avenue rivals BU and BC. NeutralZone’s rankings of 2023 classes place the Eagles at #1 and the Terriers at #4. BC’s class includes six players from the NTDP U18s. BU’s class is led by #11 overall NHL draft pick, D Tom Willander, and three of the USHL’s top four goal-scorers: Macklin Celebrini, Jack Harvey and Shane Lachance.
Boston Hockey Blog co-director Belle Fraser was a featured guest on the Habs Eyes on the Prize podcast “to talk all things Lane Hutson, including his impact at BU and future in Montreal.” Listen on Spotify.
Looking ahead
Please note that we’ve updated the Recruits listing in the sidebar with some additions and some deletions (e.g., all the 2023s). Following the introductions of the 13 Terrier newcomers, the GoTerriers.com site now displays the full 2023-24 roster.
►Subscription site PuckPreps ranks recruit classes strictly by birth year, rather than matriculation year. Right now, BU holds the top spot for the 2006 class and is second to Harvard for 2007.
►Several scouts have chimed in on BU’s latest recruit for 2025, blueliner Charlie Trethaway, as well as the Terrier’s overall recruiting success.
▪ Gabe Foley, Rec Scouting:
"HUGE commitment as the team that got Fondrk, the team that got Morin, the team that already had Hutson, now gets Charlie Trethaway, one of the best D from the 07 group. What an insane class BU is building."
▪ Joel Henderson, PuckPreps:
"Charlie Tretheway is one of the best two-way defenders from the 2007-born class. Makes sense he’d find his way to a top-end program like BU."
▪ Chase Allen PuckPreps:
"Charlie Trethewey is one of the most reliable two-way defensemen in the class. Ranked 2nd in shot attempts against/60 with 29.13 at 5v5 amongst tracked defenders, he’s elite at mitigating shot attempts and breaking up plays."

Looking back
Shorty after former BU forward Robert Mastrosimone signed a one-year contract with Toronto’s AHL affiliate, the Marlies have inked similar deals with Jay O’Brien and two-time All-American David Farrance. O’Brien, originally drafted by Philadelphia in the first round of the 2018 draft, was BU’s third leading scorer last season with an 8-24-32 line. In three seasons as a Terrier—after transferring from Providence—he produced 70 points.
Farrance, a Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist in 2020 and 2021, had a 26-62-88 scoring line over four seasons at BU. A Nashville draft pick, he made two NHL starts and spent the past three season in the AHL.
