Skoog interview; Yip & Somerby re-up with Red Star; Bruins sign Chiasson to a PTO


Soon to begin Florida Panthers rookie camp, Wilmer Skoog spoke with Sweden’s HockeyNews.se about the path the led him to his first professional season. He signed a contract the Panthers’ AHL team in Charlotte following his 16-15-31 in 37 games senior season at BU.

"Since then the goal has been to get all the way to the NHL."

Wilmer Skoog has scored six (!) Zorro goals and after the years in college, the next challenge awaits--joining the Florida Panthers.

Wilmer Skoog scored his first game at Boston University and in the second game he accounted for one of his six career Zorro goals.

Even then, NHL interest appeared and now the 24-year-old Swede is set to sign a contract with the Stanley Cup finalists Florida Panthers.

Wilmer Skoog was playing for Västerås when he made the decision to move to North America.

In 2018, he made his first season in the American junior league NAHL and he impressed so much in his first two years in the USA that he got a place at Boston University.

         KHL interview with Brandon Yip about early career, leaving NA, hockey in  China, and this season with Kunlun Red Star : r/hockey                           

Brandon Yip (photo) and Doyle Somerby have re-upped for another season with the KHL’s Kunlun Red Star. Yip will again be team captain while Somerby will wear an A.

Yip led the team in scoring last year (21-21-42), his fourth with Red Star. He was Hockey East Rookie of the Year in 2006 and a high-scoring forward on the 2009 national championship team. Yip scored the game-winning goal in both the 2006 and 2009 Hockey East title games. Over five NHL seasons, he produced 56 points in 174 games with Colorado, Nashville and Arizona.

Yip also captained host China’s team in the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Somerby had 11 points in 63 games in his first KHL season. He was a freshman on BU 2015 Hockey East champions and national finalist squad, scoring an important goal in the Frozen Four semifinal win against North Dakota. Somerby captained BU’s 2016-17.

 

Chiasson led the 2011-12 Terriers with 46 points and had 99 points in three BU seasons. He has played 651 NHL games over12 seasons, scoring 120 goals and 113 assists. Chiasson had a career best 22-16-18 in 2018-19 with Edmonton, one of seven pro stops on his resume.

Longtime Buffalo Sabres play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret passed away last week at 71. One his most famous calls involved former BU All-American, Hobey Baker Award winner and current New York Rangers President Chris Drury.

 

Robert Mastrosimone, who skated for BU for three seasons before transferring to Arizona State for his senior season, has signed a one-year contract with the AHL Toronto Marlies. He had been a 2019 Detroit second-round draft pick.
