Terriers also garnered 12 of 14 first-place votes in the HEWBA (Hockey East Writers & Broadcasters Association) pre-season poll. In addition, BU claimed two slots on the writers' pre-season all-star team: national rookie of the year Cole Hutson and top-scoring freshman Cole Eiserman.

I get a vote in this poll and my picks were close to the consensus. I had UConn ahead of UMass, rather than tied and Northeastern ahead of UML. For the all-star team, I picked both Coles  as well as Mikhail Yegorov.

The first national ranking is out--from Everything College Hockey--and it has the Terriers sitting at #4.

Mike Grinnell of Barstool sports pegs BU at #3.

►The Athletic (subscription) has posted its ranking of the top 120 prospects under 23 years old with seven Terriers listed. Topping the list--and heading the "MVP" tier--is Macklin Celebrini, while NHL Rookie of the Year Lane Hutson is #5 and is in the "Franchise" tier. Mikhail Yegorov, Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson all are included in the "Star" tier, while Tom Willander and Sacha Boisvert are in the "Support" tier.

A few of the accompanying comments:

Yegorov is the sport's darling goalie prospect right now. He completely changed BU's upside when he joined them for the second semester last year and led them to the Frozen Four, and he's viewed as a highly talented, toolsy goaltender who still has untapped potential. He has clear starter upside with the right development and patience.

Boisvert feels like a very projectable, excellent third-line center, but you have to be even better than that to be a support-tier player in Player Tiers. As a result, he was initially one of my final cuts. But then a couple of scouts advocated for him, and I debated it some more and decided to reach out to Dom with a question. "Did you guys consider Shane Pinto at all for Player Tiers?" I said. "No, but I absolutely see the vision," Dom replied. I asked him about Pinto because that's who I think Boisvert becomes. Pinto is looking more and more like an impactful second-line center, too. I don't think it's out of the question that Boisvert follows a similar path. I think his inclusion here is fair.

Fun fact: 19 also was the jersey worn by three Terrier captains: Steve Thornton (1994-95); Mike Pandolfo (2001-02) and David Van der Gulick (2005-06).

Looking back

Vancouver Canucks Top Prospect Tom Willander Opens Up on His Career-Altering Decision

At Vancouver’s rookie camp, Tom Willander, the Canucks’ first-round draft pick two years ago, discussed his decision to sign a pro contract and his expectations for his first professional season. He also commented on his brief stint with the Swedish National Team last Spring.

"What I kind of felt when I was there playing was that when you play with pros, hockey is very different from college hockey, obviously. When you play with better players, there are some things that are a bit different. Defending is harder, but parts of the offensive game are a lot easier because you get the puck quicker and earlier, so you really have more time than you would have to make a play at the college level.”

In a rookie tournament game between the Rangers and Flyers, Terrier teammates Case McCarthy and Devin Kaplan got reacquainted, so to speak.

Women's Team

Defending Hockey East champions are ranked #11 in the initial USCHO poll. They'll open the season with a two-game series against #3 Minnesota.

In the Hockey East Coaches Poll, BU is edged out by UConn for the top spot with both teams getting five first-place votes.
