Alums Matt Grzelcyk, Sam Stevens, Shane Lachance and Jack Hughes joined the Terriers at Agganis.
►TheHockeyWriters looked at under-the-radar Columbus Blue Jacket 2025 draft picks spotlights freshman Malte Vass, who was taken in the third round.
“Vass definitely fits the bill of a strong third-pairing defender, but a player that could move up in the lineup and be a complementary player to an offensive-minded player. He’s smart, mean, and does a lot of the little things right. He’s a player that you can rely on to defend a lead and kill a penalty off. His play is very reminiscent of Tampa Bay Lightning defender Erik Cernak with his defensive mindset, intensity, and physicality to his game.”

Former Terrier
standout Brandon Yip has announced his retirement following a 16-year professional
career that included four NHL seasons (Colorado and Nashville) and seven
seasons with Kulan Red Star in the KHL.
A Vancouver
native, Yip earned Hockey East Rookie of the Year honors in 2005-06 with 31
points, helping the Terriers to the conference championship. As a senior in 2008-09,
he produced a career-best 20 goals and 43 points as a key cog in the Terriers' drive to their fifth national championship.
In both 2006 and 2009, Yip scored the game-winning goal in the Hockey East Championship game. The 2006 goal came in overtime against Boston College.
Yip’s best NHL
season was 2010-11 when he generated a 12-10-22 scoring line. Following seasons
in the AHL and Germany’s DEL, he joined Red Star in 2017-18, becoming a top
point-producer. He became team captain the next season and wore the C for the
rest of his time with Kulun, including his career best season, 2022-23 when he
rang up 42 points.
Yip also played
for Team China in international events, including serving as captain when China
hosted the Winter Olympics in 2022.
Last season, Yip's teammates on Red Star included former Terriers Doyle Somerby, Danny O'Regan and Adam Clendening. Somerby is now in his fourth season with the team, which is now called Shangai Dragons.
► Quinn Hutson represented Edmonton at the NHLPA's Rookie Showcase in Arlington Virginia. He made his NHL debut for the Oilers last Spring after signing a two-year, entry-level contract. Talking about the Showcase experience, the oldest of BU's Hutson boys said:
“It gets you pumped for the season.”
“I’m going in with the mentality that every year it is a bigger challenge, and you have to be fully prepared,” continued Quinn, who played five regular season games with Edmonton in 2024-25. “You want to be at your best once camp starts.”
