Last minute nightmares haunt Men & Women; Willander's first NHL goal

#18 Terriers gave up a rebound goal with 21.2 seconds left in regulations and the Vermont Catamounts skated away with a 3-2 victory at Agganis Arena. The win, in the 100th game between the teams, allowed UVM to split the weekend series and to snap BU's streak of 11 consecutive wins against the Cats.

"I thought we played well enough to win the hockey game," a visibly disappointed Coach Jay Pandolfo said.  "Couple of costly mistakes. We lost coverage around the net. We turned one over in the neutral zone.

"It’s been the way things have gone this year for us, where you make mistakes that you just can’t make at certain points of the hockey game. But we had enough chances around the net to put the puck in the net and we didn’t," he added.

"I thought for the most part we didn’t cheat the game tonight."

Vermont jumped out to an early lead at 4:19 of the opening period when Jax Wismer wristed a shot from the point that sailed past a screened Mikhail Yegorov.

Terriers would have a territorial and shot edge for much of the period. Just a minute after a Kamil Bednarik's scoring opportunity was denied, BU knotted the score at 11:31 on Cole Eiserman's eighth goal of the season. Gavin McCarthy's pass through the neutral zone reached Eiserman as he cross the blue line. His hard wrist shot beat goalie Aiden Wright low to the glove side. Cole Hutson had the second assist.

First period shots were 14-4 BU.

In the second period, Yegorov made a series of big-time saves, including one Caeden Herrington who was all alone in the slot.

Then, with just over five minutes left in the period, a Terrier turnover in the neutral zone turned into a 2-on-1 break.  David Sacco --son of the former BU All-American of the same name--held the puck as Hutson futilely tried to break up the play, then passed to Massimo Lombardi for a shot into a half-open side of the net.

Shots for the period were eight apiece and the Cats carried a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

After several scoring chances were turned aside by Wright, Terriers scored the equalizer midway through the third period on a great individual effort by Nick Roukounakis. The power forward skated up the right side and bulled his way to the goalmouth. His first attempt was stopped but he corralled the rebound and fired it home for his third tally of the season. Jonathan Morello and McCarthy had the assists.

With seven minutes left in the third Wright robbed Jack Harvey as he tried to convert the rebound of Hutson's shot from the top of the left circle.

In the game-winning sequence, UVM was able to maintain control behind the BU goal line and set up a shot from the point by Philip Tornqvist. Yegorov made the initial save but was tangled up with a Catamount, allowing Thomas Sinclair to fire the loose puck home.

BU outshot the Catamounts 32-20 with Vermont blocking 22 Terrier shots.

In an oddity for college hockey, there were no penalties called on either team.
