Terriers edge Cats; Women top UConn in shootout

Behind goals from Kamil Bednarik and Charlie Trethewey and another top-notch performance from goalie Mikhail Yegorov, #18 Terriers claimed a 2-1 home win against Vermont on Macklin Celebrini Bobblehead Night.

After being thoroughly dominated in the opening period, the Catamounts flipped the script in the middle period keeping BU bottled up for long periods and forced Big Mike to flash the glove and quickness that have made him a top NHL goaltending prospect.

"Great start. Really good first period," Coach Jay Pandolfo said, postgame. "You know, I was disappointed that we only came out of the first period up one. But then we just completely got away from it in the second period. Really disappointed with our second period."

While the final period was better, Pandolfo emphasized that "It's not good enough. I don't know if our guys thought it was going to be easy... We started cheating the game. We stopped playing like a team. That's what I saw."

"We got the win, and we needed to get the win. But we got away from it."

Terriers got their skating game going quickly, putting pressure--and 13 shots--on goalie Axel Manbo. They also were solid defensively, limiting Vermont to four shots on goal, blocking five shots and killing off two Bednarik penalties.

BU got on the board at 14:44 while set up in the offensive zone. After Cole Hutson's shot from the blueline sailed over the UVM cage, Jack Harvey beat a defender to the loose puck. He quickly passed to Bednarik whose wrist shot from the right faceoff dot beat Mangbo high to the glove side for his fourth goal.

Late in the period Carter Amico blocked a shot from an unmarked Catamount in the high slot.

Terriers began the second period with a carryover power-play, but the best scoring chance was a shorthanded attempt that Yegorov denied. BU would have two more power-plays in the period but could only put seven shots on goal while UVM peppered Yegorov with 17.

BU's best scoring opportunity came just before the second power play when Sacha Boisvert rang a shot off iron.

Yegorov's brilliance bailed out his teammates and kept Vermont off the board. His best save came midway through the period when he snared Massimo Lombardi attempt from just outside the crease.

BU doubled its lead at 14:38 when Boisvert carried the puck along the left boards at the end of a power play, drawing a crowd. His cross-ice pass arrived in the right circle just as Trethewey skated in from the point and sent a hard wrister past Mangbo seconds after the man-advantage ended. It was his first collegiate goal and provided the Terriers with a very fortunate two-goal lead.  Harvey picked up his second assist.

With just over two minutes in the second period, UVM's Matteo Michaels raced in on Yegorov on a breakaway only to be turned aside.

Vermont ended Yegorov's shutout bid nine minutes into the final period. Caeden Herrington's shot from the point was blocked. Jonah Aegerter tracked down the loose puck in the right circle, wheeled and fired it off the post to Yegorov's left.

The Catamounts' best chances for an equalizer came when they pulled Mangbo for an extra skater creating two final scoring chances but Yegorov, who performance was called "excellent" by Pandolfo, came up big to seal the win.

BU was 0-for-three on power plays, while killing both penalties. Thanks to a strong third period at the face off dot, BU had a 33-27 edge on draws.

Final shots were 28-26 BU. Terriers blocked 15 shots with Gavin McCarthy and Boisvert each accounting for three.
