Covid uptick puts team activities on pause


The Boston Hockey Blog tweeted a statement from the BU Athletic Department: 

“In consideration of the current situation showing a slight uptick in Covid cases on campus, we have temporarily paused all in-person team activities, including practices and training sessions.

“We will re-examine our return to activity early next week following further consultation with campus officials.”

►A quarter of a century ago today, BU raised a national championship banner before its home opener against North Dakota. But the game and the date—Oct. 20, 1995—was to be far more memorable and tragic due to the spinal injury that left freshman forward Travis Roy’s life forever changed.

The Travis Roy Foundation was created in 1996 to help spinal cord injury survivors live more independent and hopeful lives through adaptive equipment grants and funding scientific research.

►The NHL’s lead play-by-play announcer, Mike "Doc" Emrick, retired yesterday after 47 years as a broadcaster and provided a heartfelt farewell video essay expressing his love of the game. Emrick, whose career began in 1973 calling games for the IHL Port Huron Flags, was on the call for several Terrier games during two NHL lockouts, including the Nov. 30, 2012 4-2 win against BC.


 

Looking ahead


In NEHJ’s review of top prospects at the Cape Cod Whalers Showcase, Jeff Cox offered praise for 2022 recruit Nick Roukounakis. A 6’2” 205 lb. left wing from Pembroke, Massachusetts, he plays for the Junior Eagles prior to the prep season when he’ll suit up for Thayer Academy. Last season, as a sophomore for Tony Amonte’s Tiger squad, Roukounakis produced 27 (11G, 16A) points in 26 games. Cox wrote:

Roukounakis has impressed me the past couple of weeks. He looks to be in better shape and he’s still a force below the dots and can get shots off quickly and with zip. In my viewings of his team last weekend, he was around the puck, produced, and drew penalties with his size and strength down low. He made a bold statement to NHL scouts, more than anyone else.

Drafted at #51 overall by Dubuque in the 2019 USHL Futures draft, he attended the Fighting Saints summer main camp, but will return for his junior season at Thayer.

Matt Grzelcyk spoke to the media about his new four-year contract with the Bruins.

An NHL.com report on Kevin Shattenkirk joining the Anaheim Ducks includes this reference to Anaheim 2019 first round pick Trevor Zegras.

Trevor Zegras, F: The 19-year-old center, the No. 9 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, scored 36 points (11 goals, 25 assists) in 33 games for Boston University last season. He signed an entry-level contract March 27 and should compete for a roster spot.
