UPDATED: Cornell rallies in the third to overtake BU, 2-1

A favorite from the Jack Parker quote repertoire is that "they ought to call the game 'goalie'," due to the outsized role netminders play in determining a game's outcome. Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, it was one of those nights. BU carried a 1-0 lead into the third period but Cornell, buoyed by Ian Shane's 35-save effort, produced an equalizer and a go-ahead goal for a 2-1 win. It was the Big Red's fourth consecutive win in Red Hot Hockey and was played before a crowd of 15,289.

BU peppered Shane with 10 shots in a dominant first period and 18 more in the third. Ironically, BU's only goal, the first collegiate tally by Doug Grimes, came in the middle period when play was more even, with Cornell holding an 11-8 shot advantage.

Readers: Having arrived home late from the Garden by train, we'll let the GoTerriers.com recap and the Boston Hockey Blog's very able Belle Fraser fill in the details. We'll provide more and some observations a bit later on Sunday.

Inches and seconds: Ryan Greene's first-period attempt was swept away just before it crossed the goal line.

On the game-winning goal, Case McCarthy, who had been knocked to the ice in the neutral zone, was a split-second late to defend the cross ice pass.

Terriers were denied on several opportunities to take the lead in the first period.

BU had four power plays, three in the final period, but couldn't put one in the net. Coach Jay Pandolfo pointed to Cornell's shot-blocking, goalie Shane and that
"there were some loose pucks around the net we couldn't find."
