In another thriller of a game—in which BU never led, but
responded in each period—North Dakota had the last word when Jackson Blake scored
20 seconds into overtime to nail down a 5-4 win and a split of the weekend
series, with nearly 5,000 fans in attendance at Agganis Arena.

Sophomore assistant captain Lane Hutson scored BU's first three goals--one in the first period, two in the second--for his first career hat trick, while Devin Kaplan's late tally sent the game to overtime. Macklin Celebrini assisted on Hutson's first goal and on Kaplan's. Mathieu Caron turned aside 21 shots.
“We’re understanding you have to play a certain way to be successful,” Head Coach Jay Pandolfo said. “It’s gonna take a little bit of time, but I think we’re moving in the right direction … that’s a really good hockey team over there, so overall like I said, I’m happy with it.”
“When you get into these games that are tight, you have to understand that you have to play a simple game — and when we did that — we had a lot of success,” he added. “I think that’s the biggest lesson.”
Just like Friday's game, both teams pushed the pace from the opening whistle. Three minutes in, Jake Schultz received a five-minute major for an elbow to Macklin Celebrini’s head. After several near tallies, BU thought it had scored a power-play goal when Celebrini converted Ryan Greene’s pass to the goalmouth, but a review confirmed the Terriers were offside.
Killing off the major gave UND momentum and they initiated the scoring at 15:36 on a snap shot by Riese Gaber from right circle that beat Caron.
Three minutes later, Hutson's first goal drew BU even. Taking a pass from Ty Gallagher at the blue line, he deked a defender, moved to the middle and wristed a shot that beat goalie Ludvig Persson who was screened by Greene.

The visitors regained the lead at 1:01 of the second period when Owen McLaughlin got behind the BU defense, received a pass and scored from the doorstep. Midway through the period, they extended the lead to 3-1 on Jayden Perron's power play snipe.
With just under three minutes left in the period, BU cut the deficit in half. Hutson dropped a pass to Celebrini at the bottom of the right circle and then headed to the slot just in time to redirect Celebrini’s return pass past a diving Persson. Kaplan had the secondary assist.

Then, with half a minute left, Shane Lachance controlled the puck behind the Fighting Hawks’ cage and feathered a pass through traffic to Lane Hutson in the left circle. He hesitated a moment while Dylan Peterson parked himself in front of Persson and then found a small space on the goalie’s glove side to tie the game. It was his first career hat trick.

North Dakota regained the lead early in the third with a set play off the draw. A quick shot by Ben Strinden beat Caron high to the stick side.
BU put on the pressure, creating good chances, but no equalizer. It was looking like BU would be
pulling Caron for an extra skater, but with just over two minutes remaining,
Macklin Celebrini sent a cross ice pass to Cade Webber at the left point. The
senior blueliner threw the puck toward the cage and Kaplan redirected it past
Persson, knotting the score at 4-4.

In the final minute of regulation, Doug Grimes fired from the high slot, but his shot went over the net, possibly catching iron along the way.
And then, the overtime was over in the blink of an eye. With
arguably its three best players—Hutson, Celebrini and Luke Tuch— on the ice for
the 3-on-3, the Terriers never touched the puck as Blake's game-winner--a great individual effort--came on the first possession of overtime.

With two assists, Celebrini remains atop the Hockey East scoring chart with an 8-6-14 line. Hutson (6-3-9) and Jeremy Wilmer (0-9-9) are tied for seventh.
Hutson ranks first among all NCAA defensemen with six goals this season.
In addition to his assist, Webber had six of BU's 16 blocks.
“I thought [Webber] had a terrific weekend,” Pandolfo explained. “He’s hard to play against, he’s great on the penalty kill, he’s playing against the other team’s top players … he’s feeling healthy clearly, so that was the biggest difference for him.”
For North Dakota, the win puts them back on top in the all-time series with BU, 13-12-1.
Next up for BU is a home-and-home with UMass Lowell, beginning Friday night at Tsongas Arena.
