UPDATED Poll Story, RHH Takeaways, SNL, Hynes back in the NHL

►Four Terriers were named to Hockey East Weekly Top Performers list:

Ryan Greene, BU (So., F; Paradise, N.L.) Tallied three points in the Terriers’ comeback win over No. 3 Quinnipiac on Wednesday. After assisting on Jeremy Wilmer’s goal that began the third-period rally, Greene scored twice in a span of 2:43, including the game-winner with 1:51 to play, to lift BU to a 3-2 victory.

Doug Grimes, BU (Fr., F; Brookline, Mass.) Scored his first collegiate goal on Saturday at Red Hot Hockey at Madison Square Garden against No. 16/17 Cornell.

Lane Hutson, BU (So., D; North Barrington, Ill.) Tallied two assists in the Terriers’ 3-2 win over No. 3 Quinnipiac. He currently leads all Hockey East defensemen in goals (8) and points (16).

 Mathieu Caron, BU (Jr., G; Abbotsford, B.C.) In the Terriers’ 3-2 win over No. 3 Quinnipiac on Wednesday, made 27 saves against the Bobcats. He followed that with 17 saves in a 2-1 defeat to No. 16/17 Cornell on Saturday.


Following a split of its two non-conference games--3-2 win vs. Quinnipiac, 2-1 loss to Cornell--Terriers moved up one slot to #4 in the USCHO Division 1 Ice Hockey Poll. BC and North Dakota, both with 11-2-1 records, swapped places with the Eagles on top and the Fighting Hawks second, although UND garnered the most first-place votes, 31. Other ranked Hockey East teams: #9 Providence, #10 Massachusetts, #11 Maine and #15 New Hampshire.

BU remained in the #5 slot in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live College Hockey Poll, just behind Quinnipiac, with North Dakota ranked #1. As in the USCHO poll, six Hockey East schools are ranked.

In the Everything College Hockey ranking, BU is fifth, while John Buccigross's ranking has BU at #6. 

Terriers are now #2, behind only BC, in College Hockey News' Power Ratings. In the PairWise rankings, BU dropped from #1 after the Quinnipiac win to #3 following the Cornell loss.

►FloHockey.TV's Chris Peters projects the Team USA roster and lineup for next month's World Junior Championships. His roster includes BU's Lane Hutson and quite a few guys from the team up the block.

Terrier Takeaways: 

We asked some of our blog contributors and friends for their thoughts on BU's Red Hot Hockey performance--other than the final outcome. Positives only.

From BU Oldtimer:

1. Shane Lachance had a strong game against a heavy team.

2. BU had several extended o-zone possessions against a team that doesn’t allow many extended o-zone possessions.

3. BU was in control of the game until they took the two penalties in the third period.

From Neal Boudette: 

1. BU generated a lot of shots, 36, and limited Cornell to 19. Shot attempts were something like 73-50.  Nine out of 10 times, they win a game like that. They had 18 shots in third when they were trying to tie the game. 

2. BU was were clearly the more skilled team. The Cornell goalie, who was a sieve the previous weekend and was pulled, played a great game on Saturday. 

3. BU only allowed 2 goals. They didn’t make a lot of mistakes in the game. They just were unable to score on goalie Shane 

From Mark Linehan:

1.Mathieu Caron continues to impress.  Not the style of goalie we’re used to but he continues to stop pucks.

2. The strong compete level on Saturday night!!  Four tough games in nine nights vs. very good teams. BU outshot and mostly outplayed a good Cornell team whose goalie was terrific.

3. The coaching staff has done nice job preparing for various types of attacks.  Especially Joe Pereira who runs the penalty kill.

 

SNL (Saturday Night Leftovers)


►The 2-1 loss to Cornell was just the second time BU has taken a lead into the third period and not come away with a victory since Jay Pandolfo took the reins.

►Our friend Bart Rhett points out that "no BU team has ever won the Kelley-Harkness Cup and won the national championship" in the same season.

►Grad student Cade Webber led BU with six of the team's 17 blocked shots.

►Tom Willander's dad, Erik, a hockey skills instructor, got a lesson about Thanksgiving travel in the Northeast Corridor.

 

►BU Men's Hockey tweeted: Let's look back at Saturday's skate with our friends at @HockeyinHarlem, something we always look forward to every time we travel to New York City!

►After the weekend's games, BU remains in first place in Hockey East with 17 points, two points ahead of Providence and four ahead of BC.

Looking back

►Following the Terriers' practice with Hockey in Harlem, the BU alums faced off against Cornell and came away with a 6-2 win.   Among the Terriers were Sam Tucker, Sean Escobido, Mike Moran, Cason Hohmann,  Ben Rosen, Matt Ronan,Tommy Kelley, Patrick MacGreogor, Dan McGoff, Eric Thomasian, Craig Sanders, Jake Moscatel and Kevin Schaefer.

Former Nashville and New Jersey head coach John Hynes has been hired to replace Dean Evason behind the bench of the Minnesota Wild.  A member of the Terriers' 1995 national championship squad, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant to Jack Parker in 1996-97.

 Grant Rollheiser, a member of the 2009 BU national champions, has been named goaltending coach of the Chillawack Jets, a junior A team in British Columbia. In the 2008-09 championship season, he appeared in 12 games, fashioning a 6-4-1 record with a 2.13 GAA and an .897 save percentage. He pitched a 3-0 shutout of Providence to clinch the Hockey East regular season title.

Terrier dropped a 7-2 decision to Minnesota State in their final game at the Smashville Showcase in Nashville.
