#8 Terriers’ four-game homestand continues as they begin a
two-game series against #9 Maine at Agganis Arena. Tonight’s game begins at 7
p.m. and will air on NESN and TSN5. It will also be live streamed on ESPN+
outside of New England. Colby Cohen returns to Agganis to join Tyler Murray on the broadcast.
BU won all three games against the Black Bears last season; two of them were very tough battles. On Jan. 21, the Terriers saw a 4-0 lead evaporate as Maine pulled even at 5-5 before BU pulled away for a 9-6 win.
In eight games (6-1-1), the only blemishes on Maine's record are a 2-1 OT loss to Quinnipiac and a 2-2 tie with BC after beating the Eagles the previous night.
“Maine’s got a good forechecking team. They do a good job in the neutral zone. So for us again, it’s the execution on the breakouts, making sure we’re sound defensively coming back into our end,” Coach Jay Pandolfo said. “They play an in-your-face type game. I’ve been very impressed.”
Maine returned its top four point scorers from last season—2nd team All-Star Lynden Breen, Ben Poisson, Nolan Renwick and Donavan Villeneuve-Houle—and added talented brothers Bradly Nadeau and Josh Nadeau, who each have 10 points as does Breen.
Another second team All-Star, Victor Ostman returns in goal and has a 2.09 GAA.
BU (6-3-1), coming off a sweep of UMass Lowell, has four skaters in double figures: Macklin Celebrini with 18 points, Luke Tuch with 12, Lane Hutson with 11 and Jeremy Wilmer with 10.
In his media call, Pandolfo pointed to good transitions as the key to last Saturday’s 6-1 win.
“One was a five-on-three goal, but the other five were all off D-zone transitions or breakouts,” Pandolfo said. “That’s when I know our team is playing well because we’re responsible defensively.”
Freshman defenseman Tom Willander, a first-round pick by Vancouver, started two on-the-rush scoring plays with long passes from the defensive zone.
“Tom's a very efficient player,” Pandolfo pointed out. “He's very good defensively at ending plays, & then when he ends up plays, he usually makes a pretty good first pass and that gets you on transition pretty quickly. He can really skate so he can get away from pressure pretty quickly."
Addressing the team’s power play, he explained, “It’s been a lot better…we’ve been more direct. We’ve been better at recovering pucks. Both special teams are headed in the right direction.”
