The Terriers roared back from a 2-0 deficit, behind Vinny Saponari’s first two-goal game, to edge Merrimack, 3-2, in the opener of the best-of-three quarterfinal playoff series.
Midway into the second period Dave Warsofsky blistered a shot past the Warriors’ Joe Cannata to get the Terriers on the board. Two minutes later, Saponari converted a Nick Bonino feed from behind the net. The sophomore from Georgia scored the game-winner unassisted four minutes into the final period. Merrimack, held to 16 shots in the first two periods, poured 13 more on goal in the third, but Kieran Millan barred the door to seal the win.
Game 2 on Saturday begins at 7 p.m. and will air on the subscription B2B Network.
