BU shut out an opponent for the first time this season, beating Merrimack, 3-0, to win the quarterfinal series, 2-1. The Terriers advance to the Hockey East semifinals at Boston Garden where they’ll meet Maine. In the other semi, Boston College takes on Vermont, which eliminated top-seed New Hampshire with a 1-0 overtime win.
Terriers received a third consecutive outstanding effort in goal by sophomore Kieran Millan, who stopped all 34 Warrior shots. For the series, he saved 92 of 97 shots for a .948 percentage.
Captain Kevin Shattenkirk gave BU an early lead midway through the first period on wrister, assisted by Nick Bonino, who upped the lead to 2-0 with just 39 seconds left in the period. The next 37 minutes were scoreless, but then Chris Connolly capped the win with a power play with three minutes to go. Shattenkirk assisted on the Bonino and Connolly goals.
As has happened in a number of recent BU-MC games, things got ugly in the final minutes with a bunch of roughing and game misconduct penalties. Freshman Ben Rosen made his first post-season appearance filling in for Max Nicastro who was cut in Saturday’s game.
BU advances to the Hockey East semi for the ninth consecutive season and the 19th time in 26 Hockey East tournaments.
