Eagles top BU in OT; Women rout Merrimack, 6-0

#15 Terriers dropped a heart-breaker to #1 BC at Conte Forum when Drew Helleson completed an end-to-end rush with one-tenth of a second left in the 3-on-3 overtime. BU goals were scored by Jack DeBoer, Markus Boguslavsky and Alex Vlasic. Goalie Ashton Abel, making his first start of the season, stopped 29 Eagle shots.

The teams meet again tomorrow at Walter Brown Arena with puck drop at 7 p.m.

BU came out fast and carried the play early on, but it was the home team that scored first. Off a draw in the Terrier zone, Helleson fired a shot from the left point that was deflected under Abel’s pads for a 1-0 lead.

Early in the second period, Sam Stevens took a return pass from Boguslavsky, skated around the BC net and his shot attempt went off the side of the net. Driving to the net, DeBoer jumped on the loose puck and muscled it under the goalie Spencer Knight to knot the score at 1-1.

Three minutes later, BU took its only lead of the game. Jack DeBoer carried the puck deep into the BC zone, then dropped a pass to Boguslavsky whose one-timer from the left dot beat Knight high to the glove side.

Midway through the period, BC connected on the power play with Matt Boldy scoring from the slot. Then the Eagles went back in front forcing a turnover behind the BU net. Abel stopped an initial shot but Colby Ambrosio rapped home the rebound to make it 3-2.

Five minutes into the third period, BU tied the score on a power play. Nick Zabaneh circled the BC cage and passed to Thomas Jarman near the blueline. He slid the puck to Vlasic who waited for Luke Tuch to screen Knight and then wristed a shot in off iron high to the stick side. A late BC penalty gave BU one more chance with a man advantage, but they couldn’t produce a game-winner.

Most of the three-on-three overtime was filled with cautious passing and retreats to center ice. With the clock winding down, Helleson skated up the right side, drove to the net, deked both Domenick Fensore and Abel and tucked the puck home with .1 seconds left.

Women’s Team

Junior Courtney Correia scored twice and classmate Kate Stuart kicked out all 24 Merrimack shots as BU blanked the Warriors, 6-0, at Walter Brown Arena. Senior co-captain Jesse Compher and junior Kaleigh Donnelly each scored a goal and assisted on two others. The other goal scorers were sophomore Mackenna Parker and freshman Lacey Martin, who record her first goal in Scarlet.

After Correia staked BU to a 1-0 first period lead, the Terriers’ special teams delivered three second-period scores: a power-play goal by Correia, sandwiched between shorthanders from Donnelly and Compher.

The teams meet again on Sunday in North Andover with puck drop set for Noon.
