Joel Farrabee’s sixth goal gave Philadelphia a 3-1 lead over the Bruins, but Boston rallied to tie the game and win in overtime, 4-3. Charlie McAvoy had an assist for the Bs.
Tom Ross, a two-time All-American defenseman (’64-’65 & ’65-’66) on BU’s mid-60s squads, has passed away at 77. A West Roxbury native who had starred at Boston Tech HS, he was the MVP of the 1966 Beanpot, (which BU won in a fight-filled, 9-2 final win against Harvard), playing with a protector on his broken jaw. He and fellow All-American Jack Ferreria led the Terriers to a 27-8 record and an NCAA tournament berth—the first for Coach Jack Kelley—in his senior year.
That spring he joined the BU baseball team and, despite not having played for three years, he led the Greater Boston League in hitting and was third in New England with a .382 average. After serving with the Marine Corps in Vietnam, he spent 32 years as an officer in the Boston Police Department and received the Patrolman's Association's highest award, the Award of Honor, when he risked personal injury to himself to extricate a motorist from a burning car. Ross was inducted into the BU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1966.
