Late yesterday, Hockey East announced that today’s scheduled BU-UConn game at Walter Brown Arena would not be played. The press release noted that the cancellation was not Covid-related, but didn’t provide a further explanation.

1970-71 flashback 1-9-71 BU 7 RP1 2 with an assist from the “Pucker Uppers”
Powered by its first line which combined for five goals, BU shook off a slow start to dominate RPI, 7-2 at Houston Field House in Troy, and improved its record to 21-1-1. Captain Steve Stirling scored a pair of goals, while linemate Paul Giandomenico also had two goals plus an assist and winger Toot Cahoon contributed 1+1.
The Engineers (14-4-2) carried the play throughout most of the first period, although they were unable to get on the board. Assisted by Bob Brown and Ric Jordan, Stirling gave BU a 1-0 lead at 18:17.
Skating out for the second period, the Terriers were greeted by a loud group of BU fans who had bussed out to Troy and were exhorting BU to crank up the offense; it worked. Just 46 seconds in Giandomenico buried his first, assisted by Stirling. After RPI cut the lead in half, BU responded with goals from Brown, assisted by Jake Danby and Bob Gryp, and from Cahoon with helpers from both linemates.
In the third, BU's Giandomenico produced another first-minute tally, assisted by Stirling and Cahoon. Following an RPI goal, BU replied with Stirling’s second, from Brown and Danby, and one from the third line, with Guy Burrowes set up by Steve Dolloff and Ron Anderson. Goalie Dan Brady, who stopped 28 shots, kept his record perfect at 8-0-0.
Just before the BU fan bus departed for Boston, Terrier Head Coach Jack Kelley stepped aboard and thanked the fans for “motivating his team” and “playing a hand” in the win.
Long before the “BU Dog Pound,” there was, for a few seasons, the “Pucker Uppers.” With the completion of Walter Brown Arena delayed by a strike, forcing BU to play home games again at Boston Arena, Kelley was concerned about fan support at the games. He recruited a group of students (myself included) to address the problem. They raised funds from the Student Union, the Friends of BU Hockey and the Athletic Department to run discount buses from West Campus and the 700 dorms to the Arena and then expanded the program to include several away games, including Providence, New Hampshire and RPI.
