Hockey East top-rookie honors for Duplessis; ’90-’91 flashback—Beanpot blowout

Two weeks after Drew Commesso earned the Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Week award, fellow freshman Vinny Duplessis earned the same honor for his 40-save effort in BU’s 3-1 defeat of top-ranked BC. The Quebec native yielded only a first-period power play goal and turned aside 28 shots over the final two periods.

Freshman Luke Tuch, who scored twice in the win against the Eagles, and Alex Vlasic, who scored his first two collegiate goals, were named to the weekly list of top performers.

Hockey East also announced one-game suspensions for BU’s Cade Webber and BC’s Marshall Warren. Each had received five-minute majors for contact to the head in Saturday’s game.

BU has moved up to spots to #13 in both the USCHO Weekly Poll and the USA Hockey Magazine/USA Today Poll. CHN's Power 16 now has the Terriers at #11.

BU now is second in the PairWise rankings and the RPI Ratings index, trailing only Minnesota State.

Prior to Saturday’s 3-1 win against top-ranked BC, the Terriers’ last win against a #1 team came in the 2015 NCAA Frozen Four semifinals against North Dakota.

The win also marked the second time this season that BU had ended the nation’s longest current unbeaten streak. BC was 6-0-1 after their OT win on Friday. Back on January 17, BU snapped UMass’s seven-game winning streak with a 4-2 road win.

’91-’91 Flashback: Feb. 8, 1971—BU 12 Northeastern 2

Defending Champion Terriers earned a spot in the championship game with a 12-2 blowout of Northeastern in their first-round game contest.

Playing in their first-ever Beanpot game, BU's sophomore class led the way. Steve Dolloff scored his first hat trick as a Terrier and added an assist, while linemate Ron Anderson scored once and assisted on each of Dolloff''s tallies. Two other sophomores, Ric Jordan and Larry Abbott, also found the net.

Anderson opened the scoring at 2:43, assisted by Dolloff and Guy Burrowes. Goals by Wayne Gowing and Toot Cahoon gave BU a commanding 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.

In the second period, Gowing scored his second of the game off a Bob Gryp feed, followed by Jordan's 55-foot blast, Dolloff's backhander and Captain Steve Stirling's breakaway goal that extended the lead to 7-0. After the Huskies' got on the board, Abbott responded with his first goal as a Terrier.

Terriers added four more tallies in the third period: two from Dolloff and one each from juniors Paul Giandomenico and John Danby.

Improving its record to 18-1-1, BU moves on to the championship game against Harvard. The Terriers and Crimson had played to a 4-4 tie earlier in the season.
