Battle of Comm Ave--take 2; Farabee hat trick

After being kept off the ice last weekend due to Covid-19 protocols, both the men’s and women’s teams resume play with home-and-home series against Boston College. The men will visit Conte Forum on Friday for a 7 p.m. start that will air on NESN+. On Saturday, BU hosts the top-ranked Eagles, again with a 7 p.m. puck drop. BC played Northeastern Tuesday night, winning 6-2.

The last time the BU and BC men played at Walter Brown was Dec. 3, 2004, when the Terriers defeated the Eagles, 3-2 on a Brad Zancanaro unassisted goal, for Jack Parker's 700th win.

The women’s series begins on Friday at Walter Brown Arena at 3:30 p.m. and concludes Saturday at Conte at 7 p.m. Both games will be televised on NESN+.

Freshman goalie Drew Commesso is one of six Hockey East goalies on the Mike Richter Award Watch List, released by the Hockey Commissioners Association. The Richter Award has been given annually to the top goalie in men’s NCAA Division I hockey since 2014.  A week ago, Commesso was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week following three wins in which he posted a 1.97 GAA and stopped 97 of 106 shots.

1970-71 Flashback: Feb. 3, 1971 BU 5 Yale 1

Terriers traveled to Ingalls Rink in New Haven—the Yale Whale—and handed the Elis a 5-1 defeat to improve their record to 16-1-1. Following a scoreless first period, BU lit things up in the middle period with captain Steve Stirling, Bob Brown and Toot Cahoon all finding the net during a three-and-a-half minute span. Cahoon upped the score to 4-0 late in the period.

Yale finally broke through for a goal midway through the third period before Stirling’s second of the night, assisted by Cahoon and Paul Giandomenico. Dan Brady stopped 23 shots for his fourth win in as many starts.

Cahoon, who scored 96 points (including 44 in ‘70-‘71) and played for two national champions as a Terrier, went into coaching, initially at Lehigh, after a brief minor-league career. He joined Jack Parker’s staff in 1974 and was an assistant on three ECAC champions and the 1978 national champions. He took over the top job at D3 Norwich and after three successful seasons there followed by a year coaching in Vienna, he joined the UMass-Lowell staff as an assistant during the program’s move from D2 to D1.

Cahoon had two more stints as a Terrier assistant, including 1990-91 when BU reached the national championship game, before being named head coach at Princeton. He turned the program around, producing three consecutive winning seasons, an ECAC championship in 1998 and the Tigers’ first 20-win season the following year.

In 2000, he returned to the Bay State as head coach at UMass-Amherst, leading the Minutemen to their first winning season in Hockey East in 1994 and their first NCAA tournament berth in 2007. Cahoon, who left UMass following the 2011-12 season and has a combined D1 coaching record of 346-398-78, has done broadcast analyst work for Merrimack and for NESN.
