BU’s pursuit of a conference title came to an end Sunday with a 2-1 loss to Lowell. The teams were tied midway through the third period when a miscommunication behind the BU cage led to a turnover and the game-winner for the River Hawks, who move on to the semifinals against top seed BC on Wednesday. The other semifinals will see UMass host Providence.
BU, now 10-4-1, will have to wait until the NCAA selections are made next Sunday to find out if its season will continue.
While the final score was close, the River Hawks maintained a territorial, puck possession and shots (29-17) advantage. Outstanding goaltending by Drew Commesso kept the game close for the Terriers.
Unlike five previous games, BU got on the board first,
scoring on the rush at 2:17 of the first. Nick Zabaneh sent the puck ahead to
Dylan Peterson for a 2-on-1 with Jamie Armstrong. Peterson’s goalmouth pass was deposited home
by Armstrong for a 1-0 lead.

Lowell matched that goal a little over two minutes later. A defensive zone turnover enabled Joe McDonald to fire a one-timer from the top of the left circle. Matt Brown’s redirection hit Wilmer Skoog and trickled into the empty side of the net. Lowell had a 12-5 shot advantage in the period.
BU found some offensive rhythm in the middle period and outshot the River Hawks, 10-6, but neither side could break the tie. Farrance nearly connected on an end-to-end rush but his attempted finish was turned aside. Commesso had to make several big saves, including one on a two-on-one rush, to keep the score tied.
Lowell dominated the final period, limiting BU to just two shots on goal while firing 11 shots of their own. At 8:19, confusion behind the BU net led to a clearing attempt glancing off Andre Lee’s skating to an unmarked Brian Chambers at the top of the left circle for a one-timer that beat a screened Commesso glove side.
Lowell kept BU from any serious scoring attempts the rest of the way. With Commesso pulled for an extra attacker, the Terriers were unable to turn puck possession into shots on goal.
