Top Rookie honors for Tuch again; '70-'71 flashback Terriers derail Engineers, 11-0

For the second time in three weeks, Luke Tuch is Hockey East’s Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week. Tuch scored his 6th goal with less than a second left in the opening period of BU’s 3-3 tie with Lowell. Domenick Fensore, who scored a goal and added an assist, was named to the weekly list of top performers.

Hockey East announced the seeding for its 37th annual post-season tournament. BU as #2 seed will play #7, to be determined after Wednesday’s first-round games. If Lowell beats Vermont, the Terriers and River Hawks will face off at Walter Brown Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m. (on NESN+). If the Catamounts pull an upset, BU’s opponent will be the winner of the Maine-New Hampshire game. The tournament format is single-elimination.

’70-’71 flashback: March 9, 1971 BU 11 RPI 0

The top-ranked Terriers’ first line put on a show as top seed BU ran over RPI, 11-0, in the quarterfinals of the ECAC tournament. Captain Steve Stirling scored twice and assisted on four tallies, while Toot Cahoon had a hat trick and two helpers and Paul Giandomenico added a goal and two assists. Cahoon’s hat trick was the first of two he’d generate in the playoffs.

With the Engineers making frequent trips to the penalty box, BU’s best-in-the-nation power play connected six times. Jake Danby and Stirling both scored with a man-advantage early in the first period, setting the tone. Giandomenico and Cahoon made at 4-0 after 20 minutes.

Cahoon struck again just 35 seconds into the middle period, followed by scores from Steve Dolloff on a breakaway and Stirling on another power play to make it 7-0.

The speedy Cahoon only needed seven seconds to complete his hat trick in the third period. Then, after Bob Murray rifled home a 45-footer on yet another power play, sophomore Ray Cournoyea—scoreless in his first 13 games—found the net twice in 33 seconds to make it 11-0.

As the game got out of hand for the Engineers, their focus shifted from trying to score to dishing out hits and applying the lumber. With four of his players nursing cuts and bruises on the bench, Coach Jack Kelley asked the officials to stop the game because play was becoming too rough, but the teams played to the finish.

For Dan Brady, who stopped 28 shots, the shutout was his third of the season. BU improved its record to 25-1-1 and would move on to the ECAC semifinals at Boston Garden.

RPI was coached by Leon Abbott, who ironically was chosen by BU to succeed Kelley as head coach after BU won the 1972 national championship. Abbott’s tenure, which lasted just six games into his second season, was marked by player eligibility controversies and game forfeitures. In December 1973, he was replaced behind the bench by young assistant Jack Parker, who remained there for 40 seasons.
