US & Canada on Gold Medal collision course; Women defeat Providence

Canada vs. USA—the men’s gold medal match-up that everyone in North America wanted and expected—is all set after semifinal wins in which Macklin Celebrini, Jack Eichel and Brady Tkachuk played key roles. Celebrini and Eichel are BU’s most recent Hobey Baker Memorial Award winners.

Depending on the outcome, there will be either five Terriers with gold medals or just one. The final will be played Sunday at 8:10 AM ET.

In the first semifinal, Canada trailed Finland late in the third period but tied the score on a Shea Theodore goal. Then with Canada on a power play, Celebrini retrieved the puck below Finland’s goal line, passed to Connor McDavid, then screened the goalie as Nathan McKinnon fired the game-winner.

  

Celebrini’s assist gave him a 5-5-10 scoring line in five games. 

Team USA had no need for late heroics as they easily handled Slovakia, 6-2. Eichel and Tkachuk each contributed a goal and an assist and were play-drivers throughout the contest. Eichel’s power-play tally gave the U.S. a 4-0 lead.

In the third period, shortly after being stoned on a breakaway, Tkachuk was sent in alone again and didn’t miss.

On the Women’s side, with Canada’s overtime loss to Team USA in the gold medal game, Marie-Philip Poulin earned her second silver medal to go with three golds in which she produced the game-winner.

Poulin had scored both goals in Canada’s 2-1 semifinal win over Switzerland, setting a new all-time Women’s record for Olympic scoring with 20.

Former BU goalie Andrea Brändli stopped 42 shots for Switzerland and followed it up with 32 saves to help Switzerland secure the bronze medal in a 2-1 win over Sweden.

Both Poulin and Brändli were named to the Olympic all-star team and also received Directorate Awards.

Looking back

2027 recruit Egor Shilov scored his second hat trick and added an assist in Victoriaville's rout of Rimouski, 8-1. He also won 10 of 11 face offs and was +3, earning the game’s first star. With 70 points (28G,42A) in 51 games, Shilov leads all QMJHL rookies in scoring. 

2027 recruit Freddy Meyer assisted on a pair of goals as Quebec thumped Baie-Comeau, 6-0.  He has a 2-10-12 scoring line in 47 games.

2027 recruit Andrei Nikolaev stopped 23 of 25 shots in Des Moines’ 2-1 loss to Madison. 

Women's Team 

On Senior Night at Walter Brown Arena, Terriers overcame an early deficit to earn a 3-1 win over Providence. 

Lexie Bertelsen's second-period goal tied the score and then Maeve Kelly's power play goal in the third gave BU the lead. Luisa Welcke added an empty-net goal.
