70-’71 Flashback

January 27, 1971  BU 7 Providence 1

Following their first loss of the season against Cornell, Terriers responded with a convincing 7-1 win against Providence at the Rhode Island Auditorium. While a road game, BU had plenty of fan support as several bus loads of students made the trip from Boston. The win improved BU's record to 14-1-1.

Junior Dan Brady made his third start of the season and stopped 25 of 26 shots. He would become BU’s lead goalie the rest of the season, culminating in his being Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA championships in March. Sophomore defenseman Bob Brown had a hand in five scores with a goal and four assists.

Sophomore Steve Dolloff converted the rebound of linemate Guy Burrowes’ shot late in the first period to register his eighth goal of the season.

In the middle period, BU poured 17 shots on the Friars’ net, getting goals from Brown and Captain Steve Stirling (two) for a 4-0 lead.

BU tacked on three more goals—from Toot Cahoon, Bob Gryp and Burrowes—in the third. Providence managed to get one past Brady in the period, denying him a third consecutive shutout.

One other highlight was provided by defenseman Ric Jordan. A tall Providence forward had been pounding on several of BU’s smaller skaters. The 6’3” defenseman waited for his opportunity, lined up the Friar and hip-checked him over the boards into the Providence bench to the delight of his Terrier teammates and fans.

Looking back

Jack Eichel’s first goal of the season was the game-winner and sent his former BU coach, David Quinn, home unhappy as the Sabres rallied to edge the Rangers, 3-2.

Brandon Yip, a 20-goal scorer on the Terriers’ 2009 NCAA championship team, has joined Jukurit in the Finnish Liiga after spending the past three seasons with Red Star in the KHL—the last two as team captain. Yip had previously played 174 NHL games with Colorado, Nashville and Arizona scoring 56 points. As a Terrier, he scored the game-winning goal in both the 2006 and 2009 Hockey East championship games.
