Mastrosimone OT tally clinches another win; '70-'71 flashback--first loss

Robert Mastrosimone’s overtime tally, his first goal of the season, powered the Terriers past Maine, 3-2, at Walter Brown Arena. It gave BU its fourth consecutive win and a perfect 2-0 record in 3-on-3 overtimes. Senior assistant captain David Farrance and sophomore Markus Boguslavsky also scored for the Terriers in a contest that saw the Black Bears twice wipe out BU one-goal leads.  The teams are back on the WBA ice this afternoon in a 1 p.m. start as part of a men’s/women’s doubleheader.

As was the case in the previous three wins, BU got on the board first.  Farrance took a Mastrosimone pass at the left point and drifted to the center, waited for a defender to slide by and wristed a 50-footer that beat Victor Ostman to the glove side. Luke Tuch also assisted on the play.

BU had three first-period power plays and failed to score on any of them, but Maine connected shorthanded on the third one as Adam Dawe’s turnaround shot from the left faceoff dot whizzed under Drew Commesso to even the score.

Early in the second period Sam Stevens controlled the puck deep in the BU end and found Farrance at the BU blueline. He feathered a headman pass to a streaking Boguslavsky who skated in and wristed the puck home glove side to restore BU’s lead.

In the final minutes of the second period, Commesso came up with several big stops.

Terriers killed a penalty as the third period opened but Maine produced an equalizer at 6:34. With BU unable to clear the puck out of its end, Brad Morrissey found the range from the top of the right circle.

The five-minute overtime lasted just 75 seconds with BU getting all three shots, the first time coming from Farrance and Max Kaufman.

On the game winner, Domenick Fensore skated into the offensive zone and around the Maine cage, and as he circled out to the high slot, he dropped the puck for Mastrosimone as two Maine defenders converged on him. Unmarket, Mastrosimone closed to the right circle and wristed the puck past Ostman’s glove at 1:15 of overtime. Farrance, who had begun the play in the BU end and then skated off, earned the secondary assist.

Assessing the hard-fought win, Coach Albie O’Connell declared, “It was not pretty,” and added, “I think they (Maine) played a really good game, they played really hard. Maine’s got a good hockey team, and I thought through stretches of the game we played well.”

“We’re a work in progress,” he added. “Our forecheck was average. We have to be better.”

O’Connell was pleased with his freshman netminder’s performance (23 saves), noting Commesso “had some key saves, especially caught a couple through traffic that looked like they might have been able to go on the net.”

The game marked the return of sophomore blueliner Case McCarthy. O’Connell remarked, “To get his size and strength and physicality back on the defensive side of the puck is terrific. And he can bring some offense too, he’s got a great shot, he’s really poised, he’s really confident and gives us a righty in the lineup.”

Graduate transfer Kaufman is now wearing an “A” expanding the leadership group which now has captain Logan Cockerill sidelined (“day-to-day”) and assistant captain Ty Amonte lost for the season again due to an injury.

With three points in the game, Farrance continues to be the only D1 player averaging at least two points per game. He has a 4-7-11 line in five games and his four goals have come on nine total shots.

Last time BU began a season with a 4-1-0 record? 2014-15.

'70-'71 flashback: Jan. 23 Cornell 5 BU 1

Terriers traveled to Ithaca to face defending national champion Cornell and were handed their first defeat, 5-1. Toot Cahoon gave BU the lead midway through the first period, set up by Paul Giandomenico and Steve Stirling. Despite having the better of the play, BU trailed after one, 2-1.

The Big Red, who had a 49-game home unbeaten streak, added two more in the middle period and a fluke goal in the third. Despite outshooting Cornell 29-25, BU was unable to get another puck past goalie Brian Cropper.

Looking ahead

NHL Central Scouting has updated its Players to Watch list, which includes seven future Terriers. Earning a B rating are NTDP U18 teammates Tyler Boucher, a right-shot forward and Roman Schmidt, a right-shot defenseman. A C rating was given to forwards Quinn Hutson, Shane Lachance, Nick Roukounakis and Jeremy Wilmer and defenseman Charles-Alex Legault. Generally, Central Scouting issues midterm numerical rankings of potential draftees but not this year due to schedules racked by the pandemic.

Looking back

In a coaching battle between former Terriers, Mike Sullivan’s Penguins rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat David Quinn’s Rangers, 4-3, in a shootout. Evan Rodrigues had an assist for Pittsburgh.

Jordan Greenway assisted on Minnesota’s first goal and scored the last in a 4-1 win against San Jose, whose lone goal was scored by Matt Nieto.
