Cockerill, Farrance pace Terriers' 6-4 win against Providence UPDATED

A night after dropping their season opener, Terriers rebounded for a 6-4 win and a weekend split with Providence. Sophomore Markus Boguslavsky’s first collegiate goal provided the game-winner in the game played at Schneider Arena. (See Defkit's Terrier Takeaway below)

Senior captain Logan Cockerill (2G,A) and assistant captain David Farrance (G,2A) led the offense with three points each, while the third member of the leadership group, assistant captain Ty Amonte, contributed a goal and an assist.

Amonte kicked off what would be a wild, six-goal first period, redirecting home a Farrance shot at 3:19. Max Kaufman also assisted. A minute later with BU on a power play, Farrance one-timed a 50-foot blast past Jaxon Stauber, assisted by Cockerill and Domenick Fensore. BU converted on another power play when Jay O’Brien, set up by Fensore, ripped a shot from the left face off dot, with Farrance getting the second helper.

But penalties nearly undid BU’s 3-0 lead. Fensore and Amonte both went off at 12:24 and the Friars scored twice in the space of 44 seconds. The second came on a delayed penalty to Thomas Jarman, putting BU on the kill again, but Cockerill intercepted a pass at the blue line, broke in alone and beat Stauber five-hole for a 4-2 lead.

Early in the middle period, Craig Needham’s goal cut the BU advantage to one goal. Three minutes later, Jack DeBoer set up Alex Vlasic for a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that Boguslavsky tipped home to restore the two-goal advantage.

Matt Koopman’s tally late in the period made it 5-4 after 40 minutes.

Providence had significant shot advantages through the first two periods, but BU matched the Friars, nine to nine, in the third. Neither team found the net until the final seconds. With PC’s goalie pulled, Amonte controlled the puck in the BU zone and sent Cockerill up the left side for an empty-netter.

Drew Commesso stopped 36 of 40 shots to gain his first collegiate win.

Comparing Saturday's win to Friday's loss, Head Coach Albie O'Connell said, "We didn't have quite the same mistakes coming out of our own zone," O'Connell said. "We broke it out really well. We managed it through the neutral zone better. And in the offensive zone we were able to sustain a forecheck, not on a consistent basis, but better."

Defkit’s Terrier Takeaway

- I thought BU rebounded nicely, not just from Friday, but also during the game Saturday, when it looked like it could be a repeat of blowing a lead. Cockerill's SHG was huge - it showed the Terriers were going to respond on this night, unlike Friday night. The third period was the most telling, when they finally settled down and only gave up nine shots on goal, lowest of any period of the weekend.

- Lots of encouraging signs from the newcomers. Jarman surprised me the most, coming from the NAHL, I wasn't expecting much. But early on at least, he looks like he should be a regular. Smooth, and physical. Tuch and Peterson are big and skilled, as expected. I like the speed that Zabaneh showed. Kaufman is contributing. And an encouraging start to O'Brien's BU career. Webber didn't do a whole lot, but it was his first game, and at 6'7", I wouldn't be surprised if it takes him a little time. I thought Campolieto looked a little better than Friday night. It will be interesting to see who sits when McCarthy is ready to go - likely Campolieto or Webber (or dress 7 d-men).

- In net, Commesso did better - he didn't give up any softies like he did in his first game (might have been a little out of position on PC's third goal - over the shoulder). As the defensive zone play continues to tighten up, his numbers should improve. I suspect we'll see the other goalies get some time - especially if we start adding mid-week games.

- Nice to see Boguslavsky get his first goal, and to see Amonte pick up where he left off.

- Penalties were an issue for the weekend, twice being down two men for a full 2 minutes. Last night it was Fensore who stood out. With Gravallese in the house, I expected a lot of whistles. But it is something that should be addressed.

All in all, after nearly a year off, with a limited roster, coming away with a split against a talented team that had played several games already was encouraging. There is still a way to go to see just where this team slots into the standings, but the team has potential. I like their depth, skill and physical game.
