’70-’71 Flashback  January 20:  BU 13 Dartmouth 4

Senior wing Wayne Gowing scored four goals and linemate Bob Gryp potted three as BU broke open a close game with five tallies in each of the last two periods and pulled away for a 13-4 win over Dartmouth. Terriers improved their record to 13-0-1, the best start to date for the program.

Following goals by Toot Cahoon and Bob Murray, who also racked up four assists, Gowing, normally was assigned to shadow the opposition’s top forward, scored his first as BU took a 3-2 lead.

In the second period, Gowing scored twice early and Gryp had a pair late with a Ric Jordan goal sandwiched between. Cahoon and Gryp scored in the first minutes of the third to bring BU to 10. After a Dartmouth tally, Steve Dolloff, Ron Anderson and Gowing closed out the scoring. Goalie Tim Regan stopped 31 shots for his 11th win.

Besides his Texas hat trick against Dartmouth, Gowing had another memorable multi-goal game a year earlier. In the 1970 Beanpot Championship game against arch-rival BC, the Kitchener, Ont., native scored three times in the third period including the game-winner in the final three minutes to return the silver trophy to BU for the fourth time in five seasons.

After concluding his Terrier career with 84 points (31G,53A) and an NCAA  championship, he completed a Masters of Education degree at Kent State while playing a season of club hockey for Don Lumley, who’d been a  defenseman on Jack Kelley’s first two Frozen Four squads at BU.

Gowing returned home to Ontario and began a 25-year stint as head coach of the Wilfred Laurier University where he led the Golden Hawks to league championships in 1983, 1989 and 1990, and reaching the CIAU championship game twice. In 1994, he was recognized a CIS Men’s Hockey Coach of the Year. While coaching hockey, he also instructed in Kinesiology/Physical Education and was Manager of Athletics & Student Athlete Development.
