Farabee shines in Philly opener; 1970-71 flashback--BU routs NU

Joel Farabee began his second pro season with a flourish, tallying a goal and three assists in the Flyers' 6-3 season-opening win against Pittsburgh. He assisted on two first-period power plays, scored his goal in the second period and added his fourth point in the final period. Farabee's output tied the all-time Flyers' record for points in a season opener.

Evan Rodrigues made his 200th NHL start, skating on the Penguins' first line along side Sidney Crosby.

1970-71 Flashback  Jan. 13, 1971 BU 9 Northeastern 0

Junior Goalie Dan Brady authored his second shutout in two starts as #1 BU raised its record to 11-0-1 with a 9-0 drubbing of cross-town rival Northeastern at the teams’ shared home, Boston Arena (now Matthews). Brady—who a season later would become the Terriers’ third All-American netminder, joining Ralph “Ike” Bevins (1950) and Jack Ferreira (1965)—had a relatively quiet night, stopping all 11 Huskies’ shots.

The win was BU's 15th consecutive victory against the Huskies, going back to the 1964-65 season.

Eight different forwards found the net for BU with Jake Danby netting a pair within a span of 27 seconds in the first period. It was the junior center’s fourth consecutive two-goal effort. Scores by junior Bob Gryp—assisted by Danby—and Captain Steve Stirling (unassisted) put BU on top 4-0 after one.

The Terriers’ third line dominated the middle period. Sophomore Ron Anderson’s goal  at 10:26 was followed by tallies from junior Guy Burrowes and sophomore Steve Dolloff.  Anderson and Dolloff each had two assists during the outburst. In the final minute, junior Paul Giandomenico joined the scoring parade.

Senior Wayne Gowing, who assisted on Danby’s first-period goals, closed out the scoring in the third period.

Next up for the BU juggernaut is a visit from a CCHA team, Bowling Green.

Looking back

Patrick Harper, after attending Nashville's training camp, will likely continue his first pro season in the AHL. Earlier in the week, he was named ECHL Rookie of the Month of December after ringing up nine points (5G,4A) in five games.
