Red edges White, 2-1, in fast-paced scrimmage; recruits shine in USHL, BCHL; Women take exhibition win

BU Red edged BU White, 2-1, in the Terriers’ final intra-squad scrimmage at Agganis Arena Saturday with about 175 fans in attendance. The refereed scrimmage featured a 25-minute period followed by a 10-minute period with the final minutes devoted to 3-on-3 action, Hockey East’s format for overtime.

Freshman Brian Carrabes gave White the initial lead, burying the rebound of a shot by sophomore Nick Zabaneh past sophomore Vinny Duplessis for the only score in the opening period.  Red knotted the score in the opening minutes of the second when sophomore Dylan Peterson converted a pass from captain Logan Cockerill. After junior Wilmer Skoog was stymied on a breakaway by junior goalie Ashton Abel, junior transfer Matt Brown redirected home a shot from junior Domenick Fensore for the eventual game-winner, following junior Case McCarthy’s on-the-tape, cross-ice pass to Fensore.

Sophomore netminder Drew Commesso was particularly sharp in goal. He stopped all 10 shots by Team Red in the first session; in the second session, he faced Team White and kept his cage clean. Abel

Defkit’s Terrier Takeaway

It was great to see live hockey for the first time in a long time. It was nice to be in HAA and to see many of the "regulars".

- Overall, I thought the team looked fast. Maybe it was the subtraction of a couple bigger guys that weren't known for their speed. Maybe the new additions are quicker. Regardless, there was an impressive pace throughout the 25 + 10 minute periods.

- The only players not dressed were Ty Amonte and Jamie Armstrong, and Thomas Jarman. But Ty was at the post-game gathering and didn't appear to be injured, so hopefully there are no issues. Despite those three guys missing, we had a lot of players!

- It's tough to gauge individual performances in a scrimmage, but I thought: John Copeland looks like he grew 5 inches and looked pretty good; freshmen RW Tyler Boucher and LD Braden Doyle looked like they fit right in, and RW Carrabes, despite not having the speed of some of the other guys, seemed to have the puck on his stick a lot and scored a rebound goal (other goals were by Peterson and Brown, who looked solid); Luke Tuch looked very good - I think he will emerge as our best player this year.

- While it could mean nothing, the plays the teams tried on the Power Play seemed different, which has me hopeful that they are going to change things up. On one power play, RW Peterson was at the right point.

- Junior transfer Brown displayed some impressive stick-handling, in addition to his redirection goal. He had shifts at both wing and center and was effective on draws, despite not playing center in his two years at Lowell.

- Skoog, who had taken a step back in the faceoff circle last season, was dominant on draws for Red.

- Ethan Phillips, who missed virtually all of last season with an injury, is back and showed off his speed, racing past a defenseman for a good scoring chance turned aside by Commesso.

- Play was not only fast, but often physical with the most memorable hit coming when McCarthy shouldered freshman RD Ty Gallagher to the ice as he tried to exit the zone.
