Looking ahead, looking back

Looking ahead

USHL exhibition games began this past weekend with numerous BU recruits in action.

2022 recruit Anton Castro stopped 18 of 20 shots in Fargo’s 3-2 win against Des Moines in the Force’s opening exhibition game. Castro played for NAHL Northeast Generals last season.

2022 recruit Jeremy Wilmer scored a goal in Tri-City’s 4-2 loss to Waterloo. Wilmer had 32 points in 37 games for the NTDP U18s last season. He had been drafted #3 overall in the USHL Entry draft by Waterloo last Spring and then traded to the Storm.

2022 or 2023 recruit Jack Musa picked up assists in each of Madison’s two wins against Cedar Rapids. Musa played for NAHL Odessa Jackalopes last season, recording 17 points in 34 games.

2022 recruit Ryan Greene, (photo) a projected early round draft pick in 2022, scored a goal in Green Bay’s 7-4 loss to Dubuque   The Paradise Newfoundland native had 32 points for the Gamblers last season.

The NTDP U18s, with 2022 recruits Lane Hutson and Devin Kaplan, open their season this coming weekend with a pair of games against Muskegon, with 2022 recruit Quinn Hutson and 2023 recruit Gavin McCarthy.

Looking back

The Athletic’s Cory Pronman reported on the "most interesting prospect" in each NHL team’s training camp. For Nashville, he picked David Farrance, who led BU in scoring last season with 16 points in 11 games and repeated as a first-team All-American.

Nashville: David Farrance, LHD, Boston University-Hockey East

Farrance was a terrific college hockey player, as a true driver of offense in his last two seasons particularly. He’s a dynamic skater who can move the puck well but is an undersized defenseman who has always had issues defending. He will be 22 years old at camp, so Nashville should get a pretty good idea of how real a prospect he is and how much his game will translate to the pro level. If he shows he can play and help their team, it would help to an extent replace some of the offense the Predators lost in Ryan Ellis.

After spending much of last season paired with Charlie McAvoy, Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk may find himself in a different role this. Injuries limited the two-time All-American to 37 games as he successfully navigated the challenges of being a smaller defenseman and came within one point of his career-best with 20 points.

Ottawa forward Brady Tkachuk is a restricted free agent who has yet to sign a contract for 2021-22. Media reports indicate he’s being offered an eight-year deal in the vicinity of $60 million.
