Canadian Captain Marie-Philip Poulin’s overtime goal gave Canada a 3-2 win over the U.S. in the IIHF World Championship. Her snipe that went in off the crossbar at 7:22 of the three-on-three extra period gave Canada its first IIHF Worlds gold medal since 2012.

As Sports Illustrated’s Steve Ellis explains, producing clutch goals in major international championships is nothing new for for the former Terrier star:

And if anyone was going to score the game-winning goal for Canada, it had to be Poulin, Canada's captain. At the 2014 Olympics, Poulin scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the gold medal game to beat the Americans. Four years before that, she scored the only two goals in the final against USA to win gold. While she didn't win in 2018, she scored to give Canada a chance.

Poulin had a 3-6-9 scoring line in six tournament games. Another standout Terrier, Victoria Bach, skated on Canada’s top line with Poulin and assisted on one of the captain’s goals. Jesse Compher, BU’s captain this past season, earned a silver medal with Team USA after having won gold in the 2019 Worlds.

Known in Canada as the “Sidney Crosby of women’s hockey,” Poulin scored 181 points as a Terrier, third best for the program, trailing only Bach (198) and Sarah Lefort (183). She also is the all-time leader in shorthanded goals with nine and tied for most tallies in a game with four.

Poulin led the Terriers to Hockey East Championships in 2012, 2013 and 2015 and to the NCAA championship game in 2013. She had taken a year’s leave from BU in 2013-14 to lead Canada to its Olympic gold medal repeat. In 2014-15, Poulin was a top 3 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award.

Post-BU, Poulin has starred for the CWHL Montreal Canadiennes, winning the league's Most Valuable Player award in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2018-19.
