Nov. 24, 2007—In the inaugural Red Hot Hockey game at Madison Square Garden, BU scored three first period goals and went on to double up Cornell, 6-3, before a sellout crowd of 18,200. With the win, the Terriers secured the privilege of having legendary coach Jack Kelley’s name go first on the bi-annual event’s permanent trophy, the Kelley-Harkness Cup. Kelley and famed Cornell coach Ned Harkness participated in a ceremonial puck drop.
In a less than three-minute span, BU built a lead on tallies by Joe Pereira, Luke Popko and Brandon Yip. The teams traded goals in the middle period with co-captain Pete MacArthur scoring the eventual game-winner for BU. Colin Wilson and Boomer Ewing added third period goals sandwiched around two Big Red goals. Brett Bennett stopped 25 shots for BU.
The game was the first-ever college hockey game to sell out Madison Square Garden. The four Terrier standouts from the 1980 U.S. Olympic champions, Jim Craig, Mike Eruzione, Jack O'Callahan and David Silk, were pre-game participants and received standing ovations.
