Game Day: Red Hot Hockey at MSG; 50th anniversary of WBA

Terriers are in New York City for tonight’s match-up with nationally ranked #10 Cornell in the eighth edition of Red Hot Hockey at Madison Square Garden. BU has a 3-2-2 record in the previous seven contests, although the Big Red has won the two most recent meetings. The teams will play for two year’s ownership of the Kelley-Harkness Trophy, named for legendary coaches Jack Kelley and Cornell’s Ned Harkness.

For BU, juniors Wilmer Skoog and Robert Mastrosimone are tied for the team’s goal-scoring and points leads with identical 5-6-11 scoring lines. Classmate Domenick Fensore has 10 points and is the Terriers’ assist leader with eight.

50th Anniversary of Walter Brown Arena

On this date in 1971, defending national champion BU opened the school's first on-campus arena, Walter Brown Arena, in the season opener against Yale. A crowd of 2,511 was in attendance at the facility which still had one section of exterior wall not yet completed.

The Elis stunned the crowd by jumping out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of Greg Rivet goals in the first six minutes. The Terriers countered quickly with goals from Ron Anderson, captain Jake Danby (photo) and Ric Jordan to take a 3-2 lead after one period.

In the second period, BU extended the advantage on goals by Don "Toot" Cahoon, Steve Dolloff on a breakaway and Peter Thornton. Yale closed the gap with a third-period goal but 6-3 was as close as the visitors would get. Dan Brady and Tim Regan split the goaltending, making 21 saves, while BU took 52 shots for the game.

Looking back

Joel Farabee’s highlight-reel unassisted tally, his sixth goal of the season, came in the Flyer’s 6-3 loss to Carolina.

Prior to Friday’s Boston-New York match-up, NHL.com looked at the long friendship between former Terrier Charlie McAvoy and the Rangers’ Adam Fox, a Harvard standout. The two blueliners grew up in the Long Island Gulls organization where they were teammates—and often paired together—for a decade.
