Terriers tie again, lose in shootout--UPDATED

BU rode another strong effort from
Drew Commesso in net (29 saves) and goals from Jay O'Brien and Dylan Peterson to earn a tie against Northeastern (9-4-1) at Matthews Arena last night. After a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime, Northeastern edged the Terriers 2-1 in the 8th round of the shootout. For both teams, this was the 4th straight game to go into overtime.

For the second night in a row, the Terriers (4-8-2) played a more effective game than in recent weeks, firing 35 shots at Northeastern goalie Devon Levi. The sophomore netminder once again showed why he is a top prospect, stymying BU on multiple occasions.
Aidan McDonough, who scored the game's only goal on Friday night, started the scoring in the first period by corralling a loose puck in the left faceoff circle and beating a screened Commesso. However, just over a minute later, O'Brien out-hustled a Huskie defender to a rebound of a Domenick Fensore shot and beat Levi to the short side. Robert Mastrosimone picked up the secondary assist on the play. Shots were even in the first period, 13-13.
In the second period, Peterson bounced a shot off a defenseman's skate from in tight on the power play to give the Terriers the lead. Ethan Phillips and Alex Vlasic were credited with assists on the goal. Shots after two periods favored BU, 25 to 21.
In the third period, with Northeastern on the Power Play, the Terriers had an opportunity to clear the puck from the slot, but the Huskies were able to disrupt the play and McDonough kept the hot hand, firing a shot that was heading wide but deflected past Commesso off the skate of Vlasic. BU really picked up their game after the tying goal, but were not able to find the back of the net.
Overtime saw Northeastern outshoot BU 3-1, but neither team was able to score, officially ending the game in a tie, but sending the Terriers to their second shootout in the past four games. After Jeremy Bucheler and Jay O'Brien scored in the early rounds of the shootout, both goalies shut the door until Jack Hughes was able to slide his attempt through Commesso's legs to give the hosts the extra point.

After the game, Coach Albie O'Connell said, “We played well enough to win, we played well enough to tie. So, happy with our club––the way we played all weekend. If we continue to put periods together and games together we’re going to be on the right side of it.”

The Terriers will try to get back in the win column when they face-off against Cornell in the eighth edition of Red Hot Hockey at Madison Square Garden on Saturday at 8:00. O'Connell indicated that junior transfer Matt Brown, who has missed the past nine games with an injury, should be back for the game at MSG.

TERRIER TAKEAWAY, by Douglass Freeman:

Northeastern played a better game than they did Friday, as the shots reflected. But overall, BU looked like the better team and Levi proved his worth.
- It looked to me like Peterson knew what he was doing when he banked the shot in off the defenseman's skate. He was approximately four feet from the crease; so it was pretty easy to put the puck exactly where he wanted to.
- Tough luck for the captain in the shootout - Cockerill lost the puck before getting a shot off.
- Fensore was flying, and didn't mix in any bad turnovers. If he can protect the puck while still making the skating plays he is capable of, he could be a dominant player.
