Terriers tie UMass, but lose shootout, Women upend Holy Cross

Playing their best hockey in several weeks, Terriers skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with #8/9 UMass in the front end of a home-and-home at Agganis Arena. The Minutemen scored the only shootout goal to grab the extra point. BU goals were by Case McCarthy and Dylan Peterson.

Despite a decided shot advantage by BU in the first period, UMass struck first on a power play. Reed Lebster connected just 17 seconds into the man-advantage, firing the puck past a screened Drew Commesso, assisted by Bobby Trivigno and Ryan Ufko at 14:44.

BU responded quickly with some nice stick-handling by Peterson setting up McCarthy for a wrister from the right circle that beat Matt Murray low to his stick side. His third goal in four games, following a turnover forced by Jamie Armstrong, evened the score at one apiece.

But UMass would regain the lead before the end of the period as Garrett Wait converted a backdoor feed from Ryan Ufko. A five-bell save by Commesso on Anthony Del Gaizo in the final minute kept the deficit at one.

The second period was more even with BU holding an 11-9 shot advantage. After failing to convert on two power plays early in the period, a third UMass penalty provided the opportunity to tie the game. Wilmer Skoog won the draw to Domenick Fensore who passed to Jay O’Brien at the right point. O’Brien returning to action for the first time since the opening weekend, wristed a shot off Murray’s blocker. The rebound was at a defender’s feet in the left circle, but Peterson quickly gained control and whipped the puck home to draw BU even at 2-2.

After a scoreless third period, BU dominated the 3-on-3 overtime with all five shots, coming close on an strong individual effort by Fensore that just missed the net.  Lucas Mercuri produced the only shootout tally.

The tie ended the four-game winless streak for BU, who outshot UMass, 34-25.

The teams meet again Saturday at the Mullins Center in Amherst. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. for the contest that will air on NESN.

Noting that his team played with both energy and smarts, Coach Albie O’Connell said, “Five-on-five I was really pleased with our effort, our poise, how we managed the puck. And we played like men tonight.” He added that O’Brien, who led BU with seven shots, had played well on both sides of the puck and that his return brought positive energy to the team.
