Terriers dropped their third consecutive game, falling to Northern Michigan, 5-3, in the front end of a two-game series in Marquette, Mich. Robert Mastrosimione scored twice while Case McCarthy added a late goal as BU’s rally fell short.
The Wildcats scored on three of their first four shots, chasing Drew Commesso from the net, and held a 4-1 lead after one period. Two of the goals came on power plays. At 16:39, with BU on a man advantage, Wilmer Skoog’s slick pass from the net was on the stick of Mastrosimone charging the net from the right side and he buried the shot. McCarthy also assisted as BU cut the lead to 3-1. Two minutes later, Vinny Duplessis, who relieved Commesso, yielded NMU’s fourth goal
BU dominated the middle period, outshooting the Wildcats, 11-2, but found the net just once. After Braden Doyle intercepted a pass, Mastrosimone and Skoog worked a give and go with the junior forward from East Islip, N.Y., connecting from the bottom of the left circle, midway through the period, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Terriers had a pair of golden chances to get closer on a Tyler Boucher shot that nearly slid inside the left post and Jamie Armstrong’s point blank shot, set up by Nick Zabaneh.
BU pulled within one skating four-on-four with seven minutes remaining in the third period. Zabaneh raced up the left side and sent a pass to the high slot for Dylan Peterson, who dropped the puck for McCarthy’s blast from the top the right circle.
With the goalie pulled, BU pressed for an equalizer, but NMU intercepted a pass and found the empty net for the 5-3 final.
Duplessis stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced, including 14 in the final period, to keep BU hopes of a comeback alive. It was his second appearance of the season.
Skoog, with two assists, leads BU with nine points, while Mastrosimone is the top goal-scorer with five.
