NU holds off BU for 1-0 overtime win

After dominating in shots and puck possession through three scoreless periods, the Terriers dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Northeastern in overtime at Agganis Arena. The Huskies’ top scorer Aiden McDonough fired the game-winner 55 seconds into the 3-on-3 extra session. It was BU's third consecutive overtime game.

Northeastern’s Devon Levi, who came into the game with the best GAA in the conference (1.58), was a stone wall in net, stopping 38 Terrier shots.

Thanks to BU's puck possession and strong forechecking, Drew Commesso faced a lesser workload, stopping 15 of 16 shots.

BU had a 14-3 shot advantage in the opening period, including a Brian Carrabes breakaway foiled by Levi. Late in the period, a turnover at the BU blueline allowed NU’s Jack Hughes to walk in on Commesso, but his shot was gloved away.

Just a minute into the second period, Ethan Phillips stripped a Husky defender behind the cage and Captain Logan Cockerill fed a charging Ty Amonte, whose one-timer rang off the post to Levi's left.

Four minutes later Commesso extended a leg to rob Justin Hryckowian at the goalmouth. Two more Terrier breakaways went by the boards as a dozen BU shots in the period yielded no goals.

BU's best chance in the third period came on a 3-on-2 rush with six minutes remaining. Carrabes headmanned the puck  Max Kaufman who slid a pass to Jamie Armstrong at the goalmouth, but Levi slammed the door.

In overtime, Jay O'Brien's pass to Alex Vlasic, who was posted at the crease, skipped past the defenseman. Moments later, with BU in possession in the offensive zone, an errant pass was intercepted by McDonough who dashed up ice on a 2-on-1. He held the puck until reaching the right circle and fired a shot that beat Commesso low to the glove side.

After the game, Coach Albie O'Connell remarked,"It was a frustrating ending, to say the least. I like our effort. I liked the way we played. We battled hard."

Despite BU's 38 shots on goal, O'Connell clearly wasn't happy with the way his team attacked the net, pointing out too much stick-handling on breakaways and drop passes instead of putting pucks on the net. He added that "We generated a lot of scoring chances and if we shot the puck [more], we’d have generated a lot more. I didn’t like the way we shot the puck tonight.”
