Commesso stars in U.S. win against Slovakia; 2nd round voting begins UPDATED

Following Team USA’s 3-2 win over Slovakia in the first preliminary round of the IIHF World Junior Championship, Drew Commesso was named U.S. player of the game. The sophomore netminder stopped 23 of 25 shots and kept Slovakia off the scoreboard through two periods as the U.S. built a 3-0 lead. From the IIHF report:

"Commesso gave his team the boost it needed in the early going. The U.S. started slowly and incurred the first two penalties, but the goalie was there with a full toolbox of sharp play—pad save, glove save, even a bit of luck with a save off the shaft of his stick."


Team USA is back on the ice Tuesday, meeting Switzerland in a 4:30 p.m. ET start that will air on NHL Network.

Looking ahead

Three future Terriers—forwards Jack Harvey and Devin Kaplan (photo) and defenseman Lane Hutson,—have been named to the rosters of the 2022 BioSteel All-American Game in Plymouth, Michigan, on Jan. 17. The game features 2022 NHL draft-eligible players from the USHL. Hutson and Kaplan play for the NTDP U18s and Harvey skates for the Chicago Steel.
