Game Day: BU at Brown UPDATED

Terriers return to the ice this afternoon with a non-conference game against Brown at Meehan Auditorium in Providence. Puck drop is at 2 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+, a subscription site. (Link below).

BU finished the first semester with a disappointing 6-9-3 record after being a pre-season pick for second in Hockey East. Terriers will look to launch a turnaround against the Bears, who also have struggled and sit at 3-9-0.

Regular rivals during BU’s ECAC years, the Terriers and Bears last met in January of 2020 with BU gaining a 3-2 overtime win with Wilmer Skoog delivering the game-winner in his collegiate debut. BU’s last visit to Meehan Auditorium was in December of 1993 with the Terriers winning, 2-1. Current BU Director of Hockey Operations Doug Friedman scored the eventual game-winner while current Terrier associate head coach Jay Pandolfo  assisted on the game's opening goal.

After shutout wins at home against Harvard and Dartmouth early this month, Brown dropped decisions on the road to BC and Yale.

Senior Justin Jallen leads the Bruins’ attack with eight points (3G,5G), while classmate Michael Maloney is the top goal scorer with four. Freshman Mathieu Caron has handled the bulk of the goaltending and has a 3.10 GAA.

Brown’s roster includes two connections to BU: junior defenseman Luke Krys is the younger brother of former Terrier Chad Krys; and freshman Thomas Manty’s father, Scott Manty, skated for BU in the 1980-81 season.

Since mid-November, BU has played eight close contests with six going to overtime, winning two of the OT games, losing one and tying three times—all resulting in shootout losses.

BU’s offense is led by Domenick Fensore with 14 points and Skoog with 13. Dylan Peterson and Robert Mastrosimone each have 12 and Case McCarthy has 11. Skoog and Peterson share the goal-scoring lead with six apiece.

Yesterday in BU Hockey History—Dec. 30, 1971

Defending national champion Terriers’ undefeated streak was snapped at nine games (8-0-1) when they were edged by Cornell, 3-2, in the title game of the Syracuse Invitational Tournament. The Big Red trailed, 2-1, going into the final period, but scored twice in the final 20 minutes to secure the win.

BU had last faced Cornell in the consolation game of the 1971 ECAC tournament and came away with a hard-fought 6-5 win that led to a Terrier berth in the NCAA Frozen Four, also in Syracuse.

Cornell took a first period lead on Dave Westner’s shot from the top of the right circle. In the middle period, BU countered with goals by seniors Guy Burrowes (photo) and Peter Thornton.

Just 1:06 into the third period, Westner connected again, virtually from the same spot, firing the puck high into the left corner of the net. BU pressed throughout the period to regain the lead, but with 2:06 left in regulation, Bill Hanson scored on the rush for a 3-2 edge.

BU had dominated possession and outshot the Big Red 32 to 14, but could only find the net twice. Captain Jake Danby and defenseman Ric Jordan earned spots on the tournament all-star team.
