#9 Terriers return to Hockey East action tonight, beginning a home-and-home series with the surprising # 17/16 Lowell Riverhawks. Puck drop at Agganis Arena is at 7:00 p.m. with ESPN+  and TSN+ providing the live streams.

BU is looking to rebound from a pair of home losses to Michigan in which they failed to protect leads they held going into the third period.  In both games, lack of discipline played a role in the losses.

It was the first time the Terriers were swept at home since October 2017. (h/t BHB).

"We've talked as a group, there's certain penalties that are good penalties, and there's ones that are not necessary,” Coach Jay Pandolfo said on his media call. “We've taken too many unnecessary penalties, and that's the thing we have to fix."

The Terriers stand at 4-3-0, the same record they had last season after seven games. It's something the players have taken note of.

"Some of our guys have mentioned that in some of the meetings...it's a work in progress." Pandolfo explained. "I don't know how many new guys we have in our lineup, it's at least seven or eight. That's a lot of guys to come in.

“I think it’s still a feeling-out process for some of our guys on what they need to do to help the team,” he continued “I think they’re starting to figure it out a little bit. Especially with a younger team, it’s going to take time. You just don’t want it to take too much time.”

Pandolfo reported that freshman center Brandon Svoboda has practiced this week and will return to the line-up, bringing added size and speed.

Grad student Brehdan Engum, a four-year Lowell blueliner, will be facing his former teammates this weekend.

The River Hawks, ranked 9th in the Hockey East pre-season coaches poll, bring a 5-1-0 record into the game after winning four of five non-conference games and defeating Merrimack 6-3. In their last outing, they defeated Holy Cross, 5-4 in overtime.

The offense, which is averaging 4.0 GPG, is led by senior Owen Cole (4 goals, 8 points), freshman Chris Delaney (5 goals, 7 points) and junior Scout Truman (3 goals, 6 points). Heading a veteran defensive corps are Kings' draft pick grad student Ben Meehan (1-6-7) and senior Isac Jonsson (1-4-5).

Among six transfers on the roster are three grad student blueliners, including Pierson Brandon from Colgate.

Grad student Henry Welsch has a perfect 5-0-0 record in goal, along with a 1.85 GAA and a .919 save percentage. Lowell is averaging just 24 shots allowed per game.

Their 2nd-best-in-D1 power play is clicking at a gaudy 42.1% while the penalty kill. is at 84.2%.

Looking ahead

2026 recruit Luke Schairer scored 32 seconds into overtime as Team USA beat Czechia, 4-3, completing a comeback from a 3-0 deficit in the quarterfinals of the World U17 Challenge in Sarnia, Ont. The win sends the U.S. to the tournament semifinal.

Earlier in the week, the 6’2”, right-shot defenseman assisted on a pair of goals in Team USA’s 5-3 win against Finland. With seven points (G,6A), Schairer is the U17s’ top-scoring defenseman.

Also at the World U17, 2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence, scored a third-period goal (video), briefly giving Canada White a 4-3 lead in a 5-4 overtime loss to Sweden, Lawrence scored a goal, briefly giving Canada in the third period. He also assisted on a first period goal.

PuckPreps gave Lawrence the #1 star for the game and noted:

Tynan Lawrence | Muskegon Lumberjacks | Game Rating 4.5/5
Lawrence was the best player on the ice for Canada White. His ability to create plays, open up space and make his line mates better. He showed his ability to take passes while not breaking stride then buzzing down the wing to gain the offensive zone. He notched an assist after some tidy work drawing in pressure before finding Belchetz in his office, net front. Tynan would later give Canada White the lead as he worked behind the net, faking a wraparound on his forehand before cutting back, stepping out and just squeaking a backhand past the Swedish goalie.

Then last night, Lawrence assisted on two Canada White goals in a quarterfinal 4-2 win against Finland. Earlier in the week, he scored a power play goal in Canada White's 6-2 win over Czechia.

Looking back

Jordan Greenway scored his third goal of the campaign as Buffalo stampeded the Rangers, 6-1.

Greenway and Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk, linemates on BU's 2018 Hockey East title team, got into it during the game. Video posted by BU Hockey Stats.

Macklin Celebrini scored a pair of goals, but that's all the Sharks could muster, losing 5-2 to John Hynes' Minnesota Wild.

Evan Rodrigues' fourth goal was the game-winner for Florida in a 6-2 win against Nashville.

Jake Oettinger stopped 25 of 26 shots to lead Dallas past Chicago, 3-1. He collected his sixth win in seven decisions, while lowering his GAA to 2.26 and upping his save percentage to .922.
