Discipline failures doom Terriers; Women thump Providence

 

 

#3 Terriers carried a 1-0 lead into the third period against Michigan, but two failed power plays, followed by a series of costly--and undisciplined--penalties, led to five unanswered goals by the Wolverines who claimed a 5-1 victory at a nearly sold-out Agganis Arena.

Two goal in 96 seconds by Evan Werner were followed by two power-play goals--one a 5-on-3--and an empty-net tally.

Following the game, a perplexed Head Coach Jay Pandolfo said,""After the way
we played and competed versus North Dakota, and the way we practiced this week,
I thought we were going to come out and play well tonight."

He added, "We're playing losing hockey. We got everything we deserved in that game — everything. We deserved to lose."

The fast-skating visitors enjoyed a territorial and shot advantage (9-2) in the scoreless opening period. However, BU had three great scoring chances, none of which resulted in a shot on goal. Shane Lachance and Cole Eiserman couldn't get a handle on pucks in tight and Jack Hughes opted to pass rather than shoot on a partial breakaway.

BU picked up the pace as the second period began and drew UM penalty three minutes in. Beginning the man-advantage rush, Cole Hutson faked a drop pass and rifled the puck ahead, sending Eiserman in on breakaway. He beat goalie Logan Stein five-hole for his fifth goal.

Terriers had an 11-7 shot advantage, with a few grade A chances, in an evenly played period that ended with BU up 1-0 and with most of a power play left to open the third.  

BU had two shots on goal on the carryover power play and three more on another man-advantage, but no goals. Near the end of the second power play, Mathieu Caron made a highlight-reel save on Garrett Schifsky's shorthanded bid.
Moments later, Werner connected to knot the score. Then, at 6:23 he put the Wolverines ahead, 2-1.

A slashing penalty on Eiserman led to a power-play goal when Ethan Edwards faked a pass and then ripped a shot past Caron. An elbowing major to Quinn Hutson and a high-sticking call on Devin Kaplan created a 5-on-3, resulting in a Jacob Truscott goal. An empty-netter closed out the scoring.

Caron stopped all 16 shots he faced in the first two period and 30 of 34 overall. Terriers had 23 shots.

Terriers extended their winning streak with a convincing 5-1 win against Providence at Walter Brown Arena to begin a home-and-home series with the Friars.

BU goal-scorers were Neely Nicholson, Riley Walsh, Clara Yuhn, Ani Fitzgerald and Lola Reid. Senior goalie Callie Shanahan faced 34  shots and turned aside 33 to improve her record to 5-2-0, reducing her GAA to 1.06 and increasing her save percentage to .962.

Terriers took an early first-period lead when Nicholson converted a two-on-one rush for a shorthanded goal. At 8:17, BU doubled the lead when Walsh cashed in the rebound of Fitzgerald's blast with Reid also assisting.

Midway through the second period, Yuhn redirected a blueline shot by Julia Shaunessy for a 3-0.

Providence scored an extra-attacker goal with four minutes remaining in regulation, but Fitzgerald responded a minute later with an empty-net goal. Reid added another ENG to close out the scoring.

With a goal and assist, Reid remains the top scorer in the conference with a 7-6-13 scoring line.
