UPDATED: Lawrence delivers BU in overtime; defkit's Terrier Takeaways

 Image

Tynan Lawrence scored at 1:18 of overtime to make the Terriers a 2-1 winner in the season opener at the University of Alaska's Carlson Center. The sophomore center's shot from the right circle, along with a first-period wrap-around tally by Jack Murtagh and a sharp, 25-save effort by Mikhail Yegorov, gave BU its seventh consecutive opening-game win.

After killing an early Nanook power play, the Terriers opened the scoring at the four-minute mark. Lawrence forced a turnover along the left boards in the offensive zone and pushed the puck ahead to Murtagh. The sophomore wing carried it past a defender, behind the net and then jammed the puck past goalie Tyler Shea.

The lead lasted just two and a half minutes. A turnover just inside the BU blueline led to a a breakaway that Yegorov stymied, but on the ensuing power play, UA scored on Linden Burrett's slapper past a screened Yegorov. Shots for the period were 13-8 BU.

In the second period, both the Terriers and Nanooks had long periods of offensive zone time, but couldn't produce a goal.

BU had a 15-9 shot edge in a scoreless third period with its best scoring chance coming on Caleb Malholtra's set up for Jack Harvey that Shea turned aside.

In the extra period, Alaska won a defensive zone draw but Lawrence recovered the puck, skated to the high slot and fired a shot that was defended. Harvey pounced on the rebound. His shot hit Shea and was briefly free in the blue paint before being swept away. Harvey recovered the puck and quickly found Lawrence for the game-winner.  Carter Amico, who dished out big hits all night, had the second assist.

The rematch tonight is again an 11:07 start. Game Day links are in the GoTerriers recap.

defkit's Terrier Takeaways

-There were certainly some frustrating moments, but give credit to the AKF goalie who made more than 40 saves.
- I was most surprised by how good Wang looked. Most of the chatter was that he was a project and he would need some time to adapt. He looked very comfortable out there, and JP had him out there to start OT. He was showing off his skating on that shift until the matching penalties that like everything else, we didn't get to see a replay of.
- I was also very impressed (and surprised) with Celebrini. He looked very good and I take back my comment earlier that he should be on the third pairing on a good team.
- Villeneuve on the other hand - I think he is going to need some time to adjust. He looked nervous, often mishandling the puck. And certainly not showing any Hutston-like moves. But it's one game, I'm not going to be too harsh.
- Amico certainly looked improved and played a physical game with some big hits.
- Lawrence looked good as expected. Somewhere I predicted he was going to have 45 points this season, and I feel good about that prediction.
- I also thought Malhotra looked solid for his first NCAA game.I could see him taking around 10 games to adjust and then just starting to dominate.
- Strong game by Yegorov. Allowed few rebounds. Stopped everything he saw.
- Too many penalties. The power play, which used five forwards at times, could struggle for a bit.
