Xavier Villeneuve Hockey East Rookie of the Week graphic

Freshman Xavier Villeneuve has earned Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors following his three-assist performance in BU's 6-3 win against UConn. The Chicago Blackhawks' second-round pick (#34 overall) in the 2026 Entry Draft had a hand in three of BU's first four tallies, including the primary assist on Tynan Lawrence's power-play goal. The Les Cèdres, Que., native's team-high five assists include helpers on the Terriers' last two game-winners.

► Some not-so-good news from Hockey East was the announcement of a one-game suspension for junior Kamil Bednarik following his major penalty and game misconduct for spearing on Saturday. He'll miss Friday's contest against Maine and return the next night.

SNL (Saturday Night Leftovers)

We begin post-game in the BU locker room with comments from Coach Jay Pandolfo, awarding the player-of-the-game jacket to Xavier Villeneuve and Conrad Fondrk receiving the dog chew toy the team brought back from the Alaskan Husky kennel.

►Lawrence, whose point streak ended at six on Friday, began a new streak with a power-play goal and an assist on BU’s sixth goal. He leads the Terriers in goals and points with 4-3-7 and has 12 points in his last 11 games going back to last season.

Stats' Sheet►BU Hockey Stats recap of the men's and women's weekend games provides advanced analytics including shot maps, time-on-ice player totals and game measure comparisons. He notes that "In his short 6.5 minutes on the ice in his debut, Adam Barone had a team high 80.58 xG%," and that Haoxi Wang, Aiden Celebrini and Carter Amico each logged 20+ minutes of ice time.

►Boston Hockey Blog's recap of Saturday's win quotes UConn Coach Mike Cavanagh about his squad being held to one power-play goal during the five-minute major in the third period: “They’re a pretty aggressive kill [unit],” he said. “I thought we had some great looks, but Yegorov made some big saves when he had to.”

►BHB photo-journalist Jenny Chen caught Captain Jack Harvey with the puck on his stick, just before he fired it over the UConn goalie's shoulder.

►Terrier fans aren't the only ones watching freshman Caleb Malhotra as he progressed past a slow start to have a standout weekend against UConn. Vancouver Canucks fans are paying close attention to their team's first-round pick—3rd overall—in last June's entry draft. British Columbia newspaper The Province gushed about about his performance and featured Pandolfo's post-game comments about the 18 year-old center.

● The Province Boston University coach heaps praise on Caleb Malhotra: 'I could go on and on'

“He had the puck a lot. He was coming through the neutral zone with the puck a lot. He was making a ton of plays,” said Pandolfo. “His stick was excellent all over the ice. I could go on and on. He had a great game. He had his best game. He was moving his feet, he was good defensively. It’s all the positives you want in a centreman, and it was great to see.

“I think he’s going to build off this game from a confidence standpoint. Any first-year player, it’s an adjustment. I just really liked the way he played tonight.”
