Skoog Scores Game-winner in OT, Terriers defeat Brown

The Terriers overcame a 2-0 first period deficit and defeated Brown in overtime, thanks to newcomer Wilmer Skoog's first collegiate career goal.  The 6'2", 21 year old forward from Tyreso, Sweden was scheduled to arrive at BU in October but his dominant play for the NAHL Maryland Black Bears caused Terrier Coach Albie O'Connell to bring him to Agganis one semester early.  Last night that decision paid an immediate dividend when Skoog, making his NCAA debut, one-timed a pass from fellow freshman Ethan Phillips and scored the game-winning goal from the far circle.

The Bears got off to an early lead when freshman forward Bradley Cocca skated down the left wing and centered a pass to senior defenseman Zach Giuttari from the extended goal line to give the Bears a 1-0 lead at 3:46 of the first period.  Ten minutes later Brown doubled their lead.  After Skoog was called for boarding, sophomore forward Justin Jallen fired a wrist shot past Terrier goalie Sam Tucker from the top of the left face-off circle and the Terriers found themselves trailing 2-0.

Only 43 seconds later and on a delayed penalty call, senior Patrick Harper took a pass from junior defenseman David Farrance and gave freshman Trevor Zegras a perfect no-look, behind-the-back pass.  The recently returned World Junior Tournament standout roofed a wrist shot from the right face-off circle, cutting the Brown lead to 2-1.  That primary assist was Harper's 100th career BU point.

While Brown dominated the first period, BU had the edge with forecheck and shots on goal (15-4) in the middle stanza.  At 12:05 of the second, Farrance corralled an attempted centering pass from Zegras and wristed a shot from the left point that hit a Brown defender and beat Bear goalie Gavin Nieto (brother of former Terrier and current member of Colorado Avalanche, Matt Nieto) high to the stick side, evening the score at 2-2.

The teams played a scoreless third period and each goalie had to make game-saving saves to force overtime.  Halfway through that extra period, freshman forward Ethan Phillips carried the puck into the Bear zone and dropped a pass for classmate Robert Mastrosimone,  The East Islip, New York native wristed a shot that hit the crossbar.  Phillips immediately skated through the goal crease, and set up an unmarked Skoog who one-timed a slapshot from the right circle to give the Terriers their third consecutive win.  Sam Tucker stopped 25 shots for BU.
