Playing
fast and aggressive hockey from the opening whistle, BU dominated Union and rode
a five-goal second period to a convincing 7-3 victory at Messa Rink in
Schnectady. Captain Patrick Curry scored a pair of goals and added an assist,
sophomore Matt Quercia found the net twice and junior David Farrance
contributed a power-play goal and a pair of helpers to lead the attack, which
saw 11 skaters reach the score sheet and six record multiple points.
Terriers took control from the get-go, keeping the puck in the offensive zone and taking the first 10 shots, but they didn’t put one on the scoreboard until 14:27 when Quercia converted a Cam Crotty pass from behind the cage with freshman Robert Mastrosimone also assisting.

BU doubled
the lead less than a minute later when senior Patrick Harper skated behind the
Union net and found Curry for a sharp-angle shot that beat goalie Darion Hanson
short side.
The
Dutchmen answered quickly as Chaz Smedsrud found open ice in the high slot and
beat graduate transfer Sam Tucker and then a defensive turnover gave the Dutchmen numbers in
front of the BU goal, where Sean Harrison found the net.
BU
took the lead for good two minutes into the middle period when Mastrosimone
recorded his first collegiate goal, depositing a loose puck past Hanson to his
left. Fellow rookie Ethan Phillips and junior Kasper Kotkansalo assisted.
... and we quickly got the lead back!

Four
minutes later Gabriel Chabot gathered a puck from freshman Sam Stevens, turned
and whipped a shot from the left corner that glanced off Hanson and into the net. Then, on
a power play midway through the period, Harper raced up the left side and from
the goal line slid the puck to Curry in the slot for a one-timer and his second goal.

The
Terrier onslaught was briefly interrupted by Anthony Rinaldi’s power-play goal
at 14:28, cutting the lead to 5-3, but just 40 seconds later Phillips passed to
Quercia at the left dot for his second of the night. Late in the period,
Farrance fired home a shot from the left circle for BU’s second power-play goal
and a 7-3 lead with assists to Curry and freshman Trevor Zegras.
After
racking up 36 shots in the first two periods, BU only took eight in the
scoreless third while holding their hosts to three shots.
Throughout the game, Terrier forwards hunted pucks and used their team speed to forecheck relentlessly.
With five shots over the last two
periods, Union was limited to just 13 for the game. Tucker stopped 10 shots for BU.
A pleased Coach Albie O’Connell said: “For the first game we played pretty thorough in the first two periods. The power play was pretty good. Our D gaps were good and our forwards really hunkered down in the offensive zone. We were good in the offensive zone and in the neutral zone and brought the puck up well and didn’t spend much time in the D zone.”
“Our last line (Chabot, Stevens and freshman Jamie Armstrong) was probably our best. They played pretty simple, but they wore the other team down quite a bit.”
► Quercia’s pair doubled his goal output from his freshman season.
