Wildcats win the third, win the game, 4-3

#20 Terriers dropped a 4-3 decision to Northern Michigan on Saturday night, as the Wildcats scored twice in the final period to break a 2-2 tie. BU scored one extra-attacker goal in the final minutes, but couldn’t produce the equalizer, as it falls to 1-1-1.

BU took the early lead when senior Patrick Harper took a drop pass from freshman Domenick Fensore and rifled a shot from the left face-off dot past Nolan Kent for his second goal of the weekend. Cam Crotty picked up the secondary assist.

Midway through the first period, the Wildcats took advantage of an offensive-zone faceoff, as Darien Craighead’s shot off the draw beat sophomore Vinny Purpura five-hole. They took the lead at 18:06 with a goal on the rush as Vincent de Mey’s wrister from the top of the right circle found the back of the net.
Both teams would generate 11 shots in the middle period but the only goal was produced by the Terriers. As NMU began a breakout, Fensore pilfered the puck just inside the blue line, wheeled and fired a wrist shot that Captain Patrick Curry redirected for his fourth goal. A major penalty for checking from behind gave BU a five-minute power play but none of the five shots generated beat Kent, who was stingy with rebounds all night.

Two minutes into the third, NMU regained the lead on a redirect at the goalmouth by Griffin Loughran. Then, midway through the period, de Mey scored his second of the game on a power play as he blasted a slapshot from the left circle that beat Purpura stick side bar down.
BU pressed the attack and finally cut into the lead with an extra-attacker goal with just over two minutes remaining. Sophomore Jake Wise fed Harper for a shot from the right circle. The rebound was corralled by freshman Trevor Zegras who slapped home a severe angle shot for his first collegiate tally. But that was as close as BU would get.

Coach Albie O’Connell found some positives, despite finishing the weekend with a tie and a loss. “We’ve scored seven, we’ve scored four, and we’ve scored three. If you told me that at the beginning of the year, I would have thought [we’d be] better than 1-1-1."

Discussing the Wildcat’s final goal, scored on a power play, he added:“We’ll take the blame as a staff for the penalty kill. I though the penalty kill looked terrible all weekend. We’ve got to make sure we get that right.”

BU’s top line of Curry, Harper and Zegras combined for eight points (5 goals, 3 assists) in the series.

In his first outing of the season, Purpura stopped 29 of 33 shots.
