The
Terriers launch their 98th hockey campaign today on the road at
Union College in a contest matching two team looking to rebuild their offensive
attacks. Puck drop is at 4 p.m. with the game being livestreamed on ESPN+ ($4.99/mo. subscription) and
aired on The Terrier Sports Radio Network. (For International viewers, there is a link on the UnionAthletics.com schedule page for livestreaming)
BU
lost four of its top five scorers—two forwards and two defensemen— to early
departures to NHL clubs, as well as four-year forward Bobo Carpenter. Captain
Patrick Curry leads the returning forwards after a career best 26 points, along
with Patrick Harper (20) and Logan Cockerill (11). BU also will be without Ty Amonte
(16), due to a season-ending injury. Grad transfer Alex Brink had 14 points for
Brown.
A six-pack of freshman forwards is led by three selected in June’s NHL Entry Draft: Trevor Zegras (1st round, #9 overall by Anaheim); Robert Mastrosimone (2nd round by Detroit) and Ethan Phillips (4th round, also by Detroit). They’re joined by Jamie Armstrong, Markus Boguslavsky and Sam Stevens, who teamed with Phillips to help Sioux Falls claim the USHL Clark Cup title.

Four
veteran defensemen— juniors David Farrance (20), Cam Crotty (10, photo) and Kasper
Kotkansalo (11) and sophomore Hugo Blixt (2) —form a solid blueline corps. Coming
aboard are three drafted defensemen, Alex Vlasic (2nd round by
Chicago), Dom Fensore (3rd round by Carolina) and Case McCarthy (4th
round by N.J.)—along with Sean Driscoll and swingman John Copeland.
With Jake Oettinger’s departure to the Dallas Stars, sophomore Vinny Purpura (3.16 GAA, .911 save percentage) returns and will compete for the starting job with Yale graduate transfer Sam Tucker, whose 2.53 GAA and .917 save percentage for the Elis earned 2nd Team All Ivy. Tucker faced Union once last season and blanked the Dutchmen, 3-0.
The Dutchmen likely face an even bigger rebuilding job as they’ll be without six of their top seven scorers from last season. Four seniors graduated, another player departed early to play in Europe and rising junior Jack Adams suffered a serious knee injury in Red Wings development camp where BU’s Mastrosimone suffered a broken ankle.
Top returning forward Anthony Rinaldi scored 23 points last season, while Parker Foo had 15. The defense is led by Brandon Estes (21) and one-time BU commit Vas Kolias (16). Union returns its top goalie, Darion Hanson, who compiled a 13-9-5 record in 28 games with a 2.33 GAA, a .919 save percentage and three shutouts.
Last season, Union defeated BU, 2-1, in the Friendship Four Tournament in Belfast with Hanson stopping 39 Terrier shots. Top newcomers for Union are forward Gabriel Seger and defenseman Dylan Anhorn.

The Terriers desperately need their young guys to play big roles, and I think Zegras has the hockey sense and the speed to challenge NCAA defenses. His creativity with the puck and ability to make plays you can't see coming is why the entertainment value is so high with him -- and also why the Anaheim Ducks picked him ninth overall last year.

“Wilmer has come into this season with a purpose, and has been locked in ever since stepping foot into Maryland,” said Maryland Black Bears Head Coach Clint Mylymok. “He’s a talented individual with a competitive drive, and his work ethic is off the charts. Wilmer has great leadership skills and that has been a tremendous help as we progress into our second season.”
