2000: Terriers defeat St. Cloud State, 5-3, in the NCAA
regional semifinal in Albany. BU took an early lead on Carl Corazzini’s unassisted
goal, followed by goals from Jack Baker and Mike Pandolfo for a 3-0 lead after
one. Baker’s second period goal proved the game-winner and gave BU a 4-2 lead
after two periods. Chris Heron added a goal in the final period. Rick DiPietro
stopped 23 shots as BU moved on to the regional final.
1995: In the NCAA quarterfinals in Worcester, top Eastern
seed BU defeated Lake Superior State, 6-3, avenging a loss to the Lakers in the
previous season’s championship game. Chris Drury and Kai Linna gave BU a 2-0
lead after two period. Shawn Bates and Rich Brennan doubled the lead early in
the third period but LSSU responded with a pair from Keith Aldridge. Linna
tallied his second at 17:47 and then completed a hat trick in the final minute.
Tom Noble stopped 19 shots for BU, which earned its fourth Frozen Four berth of
the 1990s.
1978: In
the first-ever National Championship game meeting between Commonwealth Avenue
rivals BU and BC, the Terriers defeated the Eagles, 5-3, at the Providence
Civic Center. The win, BU’s 4th of the year against BC, completed a
30-2-0 season—the best winning percentage (.938) in program history.
After Mark Fidler ripped a shot from the top of the circle
past BC’s Paul Skidmore, just 38 seconds into the game, the Eagles responded
with a pair of goals from Joe Mullen and Bobby Hehir. Before the period ended,
BU responded with a Dave Silk power-play goal and a Tony Meagher short-hander
for a 3-2 lead. Meagher stretched the lead with a second period goal. Then,
early in the third Fidler beat Skidmore again on a breakaway. BC added one more
goal, but Jim Craig, who stopped 34 shots, slammed the door over the final 15
minutes and BU claimed its third national championship of the decade. In the
1970s, the Terriers appeared in the Frozen Four a remarkable seven times.
