1996: Making its seventh consecutive NCAA tournament
appearance, defending champion Terriers defeated Clarkson, 3-2, in the NCAA
regional tournament in Albany. Chris Drury (photo) gave BU an early lead, scoring his
35th goal at 2:34 of the first period. Then Bill Pierce doubled the lead
with a power play tally. Mike Sylvia scored in the middle period for a 3-0
margin. Clarkson would score twice in the third period but couldn’t put an
equalizer past BU’s Tom Noble who made 20 saves. The victory gave BU its third
consecutive 30-win campaign. Drury, a second-team All-American, would be a
Hobey Baker Award finalist, along with Jay Pandolfo, who also earned first-team
All-American honors.
1991: After defeating Maine for the conference title,
BU began a best-of-three NCAA quarterfinal series hosting Michigan. Terriers
defeated the Wolverines, 4-1, behind goals from Keith Tkachuk, Dave Tomlinson,
David Sacco and Tom Dion. Scott Cashman made 20 saves for BU.
1990: After a comeback win over North Dakota in the NCAA
first round, BU traveled to East Lansing, Michigan, to meet the Spartans in the
best-of-three quarterfinals. Despite goals from Shawn McEachern, David
Tomlinson and Tony Amonte, Michigan State rode a three-goal second period to a
6-3 win. (Spoiler alert: BU would win the next two and we will have video!)
1978: Terriers upended defending national champion
Wisconsin, 5-2, in the NCAA semifinal in Providence. A power play goal by future Olympian Mark
Johnson gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the first period, but BU
would score the next five goals—two each for Dave Silk and Tony Meagher and one
from John Bethel. Jim Craig kept his record perfect at 15-0 and BU (29-2-0) moved on to the
NCAA title game against arch-rival BC.
