This Day in BU Hockey—March 24, 2020


2018: David Farrance’s third-period goal, breaking a 1-1 tie, and a 30-save performance by Jake Oettinger, powered BU to a 3-1 win over top seed Cornell in the NCAA regional semifinal in Worcester’s DCU Center. The Big Red scored in the second period but that goal was matched half a minute later when Shane Bowers redirected a Brandon Hickey shot. Logan Cockerill added an empty net goal in the final minute.

  2017: Clayton Keller’s pinpoint pass to Charlie McAvoy, charging to the net, gave BU a thrilling 4-3 double overtime win over North Dakota in the NCAA regional semifinal in Fargo. 
The game featured multiple shots off iron and a disallowed UND goal in overtime. Goals by Doyle Somerby, Bobo Carpenter and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson gave BU a 3-1 third period lead before UND rallied to tie the score. Jake Oettinger stopped 56 Fighting Hawks shots while Brandon Hickey was credited with 17 blocks.

2006: David Van der Gulick’s hat trick led BU to a 9-2 rout of Nebraska Omaha in the NCAA regional semifinal in Worcester. An early power-play goal by the Wildcats was followed by five unanswered BU tallies to break the game open. Other Terrier goal-scorers were Bryan Ewing (2), Dan Spang (2), Brad Zancanaro and Matt Gilroy. John Curry stopped 27 UNH shots.

1990: In game 2 of its best-of-three NCAA quarterfinal with Michigan State, BU rebounded for a 5-3 win to knot the series at one apiece. The Terriers got goals from Captain Mike Sullivan, Shawn McEachern, Tony Amonte, Ed Ronan, and Phil von Stefenelli in the game played at Munn Arena in East Lansing. Hockey East Rookie of the Year Scott Cashman stopped 23 shots for BU.

1991: Terriers completed a two-game sweep of Michigan in the NCAA quarterfinals, thumping the Wolverines, 8-1, at Walter Brown Arena. BU goal-scorers were Tony Amonte (2), Pettieri Koskimaki, Dave Tomlinson, Ed Ronan, David Sacco, Darin MacDonald and Tom Dion. John Bradley stopped 21 shots as BU advanced to the Frozen Four.
